Publication number: 20160295760

Abstract: The invention is a new and distinct pear tree variety denominated ‘HW624’. The new pear tree is characterized by producing heavy crops of medium-to large-sized fruit, picked about 2 weeks after ‘Bartlett’. Fruits are green when harvested, turning yellow as fruits ripen, and there is a medium red blush where exposed to the sun. There were no natural fire blight infections on the seedling tree, and results from controlled inoculations indicate a high level of resistance to fire blight. The tree is also highly resistant to pear psylla.

Patent number: PP12631

Abstract: A new variety of pear tree discovered as a whole tree mutation. The new variety appears similar to the ‘d’Anjou’ pear tree but has larger leaves, shorter stems, and a different color of one-year-old wood. The date of full bloom of the new variety is 5 to 6 days later than the ‘d’Anjou’ tree. The fruit of the new variety has a finish that is cleaner, smoother and free of russet when compared with the finish of the ‘d’Anjou’ pear. The fruit of the new variety is quite edible right off to the tree, while that of the ‘d’Anjou’ is not.

Think you all know why i looked these up. Want to find out the latest on pears!

This pear was bred here in Switzerland and introduced under the name Fred. It is a cross between Harrow Sweet and Verdi (which is a cross between Louise Bonne d’Avranches and Comice). I have only tasted them once, since they aren’t yet widely available yet from grocery stores. I bought it in January and it was then very firm, with still crunchy flesh. The Taste was not bad, but I honestly don’t remember being wowed. Rather, I distinctly remember being surprised that Agroscope had selected a pear with this kind of texture. It was not the buttery, melting, fine texture I expect of good pears, it was more crunchy and coarse. If I find them again, I’ll report back with a hopefully more detailed description.

Very few modern pears are bred primarily for flavor so I confess I don’t pay much attention to the patents. Maybe one of these years they will breed some new awesome tasting pears.

@scottfsmith

They give up a lot of flavor for disease resistance.

Has anyone tasted any of these new pears?

If someone could patent a fireblight resistant perry pear, that’d be a game changer
