I got seeds that were supposed to be lemon cucumber. I only got one fruit but it is elongated, unlike a normal lemon cuke, and the skin is smoother, rather than the sometimes spiky skin of lemon cuke. The pulp inside is quite pleasantly tart. Does anyone have experience with a lemon cucumber that is elongated?
Most or all cucumbers turn yellow and sour if you let them ripen after reaching physical maturity. The lemon cucumbers I’ve grown were very small (maybe tennis ball sized for the larger ones), turned yellow very quickly without souring much at that stage, and were spiny beyond belief on both the fruit and the vines.
This is one I didn’t notice on the vine (somehow) until it turned yellow and I spotted it from the other side of the yard. Normally, I’d pick it at 2/3rds that size. Tried eating it, but the flesh was kind of tough and the goo was sour, so it got tossed.
I’m guessing that photo was not a lemon cucumber. yeah, most of the lemon cukes that I’ve grown are round like you said. The one that grew this year is not necessarily any better than a lemon cuke but the size, shape and skin smoothness are so different that I’m wondering if it’s worth growing out and distributing, even just as a novelty.
