Lemons/ mystery citrus

These are my litter sister’s “lemon” trees. The big funny-looking ones with spines all over the tree are from my uncle, he brought over some type of fruit saying it was lemons from his garden. The lemon in question was much larger than your traditional lemon and much much sweeter, it tasted like a lemon but without the sour aspect and my sister managed to collect the seeds and grow them. The two larger trees are about 2 years old and the little, tiny trees are 9 months. The tiny trees are from seeds from a store-bought lemon. The soil is a regular shrub and tree mix from the store and we have to move the trees in and out of a tiny greenhouse when it is cold.

Your uncle’s lemon tree may be a New Zealand Lemonade tree based off your description. Its a hybrid that’s not true to seed so any seedlings could be quite different from their parent.

He grew them in California, what should we expect if that’s the case?

I grew a New Zealand lemonade from seed and grafted an new Zealand lemonade scion to it. It is growing nicely.

Do you have to prune lemon trees?
