Does anyone by chance have any seeds from their Limbertwig apples that they would be willing to sell/send? I am planning to grow some seedlings myself and I think Limbertwig apples are the way to go for my area as I am nestled in the Shenandoah valley of VA. I have several Limbertwig trees but they’re too young to bare and I don’t want to wait for them - I’d like to get a start on growing seeds now! Thanks
Last season I had a few Black Limbertwig apples that were pollinated using Scarlett Surprise pollen. Then they all disappeared one night. Between that an a buck deer destroying several trees by rubbing antlers in them (in my completely fenced back yard), it appears the nature tax is high in my neighborhood.
The black limbertwig tree didnt take much damage though, so hopefully this year there will be more seeds tgat I actually get to keep.
I have some OFLTs and BMLTs in my fridge. I can salvage some seeds. I have no idea what they’re pollinated with since they were commercially grown.
I’m not sure if you’re into them for the flavor or resilience.
My Victoria has the cleanest leaves but It won’t have fruit until 2027.
The Old Fashioned Limbertwig, when ripened correctly, has the most kick-ass flavor. It has also won two family taste tests unanimously against heavy weights such as the Cosmic Crisp and Goldrush. That being said, the graft I have growing on my Ark Black was very trashy last year.
My Swiss LT will have fruit this year unless fireblight becomes an issue. It will likely be pollinated by a Golden D.
I should still have some Limbertwig apples in the fridge we’ll be eating over the next few months. I did not intentionally cross pollinate them with anything, but… We’re surrounded by forest and the only other apple trees which would be likely to provide pollen, are mostly heirloom varieties nearby in my home orchard. So the chances are probably fairly good I’d bet… (Victoria and Kentucky are likely the only two I’ll have)
Be happy to save some seeds and send to you… Be even happier to receive scions of any Limbertwig varieties I don’t already have ![]()
Specifically I don’t have and would like to have Brush Mountain, Old Fashioned and Red Royal.
@wdingus @KPS i’d love any seeds you can salvage, and if they’ve been in the fridge all the better because they’ll be cold stratified!
I can share scion as well - I have Brushy mtn, Red Royal (I think I have enough growth for scion), and OFL I might have a tiny branch. Otherwise, I have Victoria, black, Myers Royal, Royal, and Swiss but maybe not enough growth on Swiss
Good deal, I ate a Victoria LT tonight and saved the seeds. Will gather up more over the coming weeks/months and keep 'em cold.
Other Limbertwigs I have so far are Fall, Ruby, White, Watts, Swiss, Virginia, Black, and Myers Royal. Only a few are old enough to have fruited so far. They’ve just intrigued me since most originated from my general area, the corners of TN, VA, NC, and KY. It also doesn’t hurt that a few are renowned as some of the best dessert apples around…
