Dax,
What was the lowest temp in -F at Jerry Lehman Z5 in Indiana in the last 15 years? I just want to see the coldest temp that the 400-9 was exposed to.

I tell ya getting there is like winding around inside of a maze of forested areas of neighborhoods with actual forests. He’s inside of a bullseye that’s surrounding that orchard and literally the road winds down into his home and which lies in the middle of a short street with maybe a dozen houses. He’s a few miles from Terre Haute IN. On a USDA zone map he’s in zone 5b with 6a a few miles away & (good for the orchard) it’s at the highest elevation which doesn’t change much at all but the orchard doesn’t lay low in a valley .
Hey All,
Is there anyone that is a reliable source for Sestronka and Journey Scions? I might be late for grafting but I want to try. I got some from Threefold farm but I think they may have failed during the cold snap after I grafted. The tree is pushing but the scions are not. Correct me if I am wrong but you have to fill out, by hand, a form to get scions from Cliff England. Thanks All. Any help appreciated
Cliff readily takes orders via email with no problems. You should rub off growth from the rootstock to give your scions the best chance of taking. Persimmons will rebel and starve a graft by pushing out rootstock growth.
Thanks. I appreciate your advice. Sorry for being a nag but how does the process work on his site? I mean how do I send him the money? I would rather pay up front. Thanks
Send the order form with a check. If you’re uncertain about the total then call him: http://www.nuttrees.net/
I’ve remitted payment via paypal for previous transactions.
I believe plastic over the phone is an option as well. I am excited to graft the Journey I received from him this year!
I paid by Venmo this year. I told him what I wanted and he sent me an invoice and he was happy with Venmo for payment, but paypal or check was also an option.
By the way, you may want to search this site for reports on Sestronka. I was very excited about it for a number of reasons, but nobody seemed to get a very large or reliable crop compared to other hybrids.
My hope is that it is large as an Asian type but with the flavor of an American. I have Nikita’s Gift which is just ok to me and I have Rossyanka which I like more and because it leans more toward an American type. BTW Anybody here ever had a date plum? Are they any good. Any hybrids of these out there?
I researched them 2 decades ago. There are some very good cultivars grown for millennia in the former Turkish empire. A few of these are thought to have originated under cultivation before Homer’s time in the upper Alazani valley of present day Georgia.
Here in the U.S. nearly all the available D. lotus has been selected for rootstock and the fruit is insipid. About 15 yrs ago I checked all the cultivars at NCGR Davis without success in finding palatable fruit.
Ask Cliff for a lotus scion, he has told me years ago he had one that tasted like “chocolate candies”.
Did you get to eat a ‘Sestronka’? The taste description made me try a scion but it failed.
Sorry to hear that. To be honest I have not had one but I know I like almost every American persimmon variety I have had. They have an almost dried apricot like texture that is more firm than the Asians. I have not found an Asian cultivar that ripened with that texture. I am currently growing Suruga, Maekawa-Jiro, Matsumoto. I hope they are sweet before going mushy, Maybe the texture will be more appealing.
No. The crows here like them in that stage though.
TBH I have not had one. I missed out on Barkslips auction last year (I’m a working man. What can I say? ) ) Anyways. I found that Cliff did have some Journey available. Thanks to all the members who helped me with the process. My goal this year is to get a some Sestronka scions or a tree. I have not seen anyone selling the trees so If you know a source please let me know.
@CarolinaSeedman
Since this thread has a limited audience of persons tracking the presence of D.v. x D.k. (and the reverse) hybrids in the U.S., I recommend you try your request in the more general Trading Post category.
Thanks for the advice. It hadn’t occurred to me to do that. Post is on the way!
The Pharmer has firm farm knowledge! Those sad scions I grafted looked to be turning black. I scratched off all the green below the graft and a few of them started to jump. One has leaves and some others have started to push some green buds. Thanks for the knowledge.
