Looking for advice on training a cherry tree in a "flag" or oblique central leader form

Hi everyone,

I planted a bare-root cherry tree this past winter and headed back the central leader at planting time. Now, a very vigorous lateral branch has developed about 12 cm below the original cut, and I’m considering training this branch as the new main axis (central leader), oriented at a 45° angle.

I’m thinking of using this oblique axis as the new structure of the tree, similar to the “flag” form (or angled central leader system). My idea is to keep this branch as the main scaffold and then train fruiting branches at 90° along its back side (the “dorsal” side), spaced evenly.

Does this sound like a good idea for a cherry tree? Would it be better to continue with a more traditional central leader structure, or can the flag form work well for cherries too? Also, is it okay to make the heading cut now (early June), or would it be better to wait?

Any suggestions or experience with this kind of training system would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Massimo
