Last week I got a box of mangoes from Alex @ https://tropicalacresfarms.com/ . He is a member of another forum dedicated to tropical fruit. Buying mangoes at the grocery is similar to buying a peach, you get something picked way under ripe and nothing like the real thing.
My box had 11 mangoes:
5 Carrie, 3 Edward, 1 each of Baileys Marvel, White Piri, and Sweet tart
Baileys Marvel was nothing to marvel at, maybe what they call “washed out”? Still better than a store but that is not saying much.
Edward was what you want a store bought mango to taste like. I gave my 4 yr old cut pieces and he asked for more peach. It did taste like a tropical version of a peach.
Sweet Tart sounds just likes it’s name, very sweet and tart at the same time. In some ways it reminded me of the passion fruit I grew in California, very strong contrast.
White Piri was very unique tasting. I can’t describe nor could my wife interesting to tase a mango so different from the others.
Carrie. Thank the heavens this box had 5 Carrie in it. This mango was amazing. Lots of citrus notes in it, very juicy & sweet. I would be completely happy with just a box of those but it was nice to taste the different varieties.
All the mangoes came mature green. The Carrie started ripening within twenty four hours and the others took longer. Here is a pic of the last four coloring up:
If you only have ever had a store bought mango I suggest buying a box while the season is still going. You won’t regret it…
