Mango season in South Florida

Hi everyone, I was interested in visiting Florida during mango season. I read a story about Miami mango season in the NYT last year.

Would anyone have any tips about traveling to South Florida to be apart and learn about it all? Any interesting farms, markets, nurseries or other places to visit to see it all in action? Thank you.

I love oranges and other citrus from kissimme in the second week of february. Later there are blueberries and i love them. While i was there many times i saw mango trees but i never saw them ripe. May - October is mango season but its to hot for me in florida after april. @jeremymillrood can you tell us more?

Drew,
I use to live in South Florida. I would highly recommend Zills Mangoes. IMO the best place in Florida for all things dealing with mangoes.

Absolutely, the best farm to visit in south Florida is Tropical Acres Farm, with the most varieties, and the best quality fruit, in west Palm Beach Florida. We visit every year in the early/mid season. The quality of the fruit is unmatched and superior to anywhere we have visited in that area, witch is considered to be the best area in Florida for top notch mangoes! As well Alex is super knowledgeable about everything mangoes and what different flavors one might like as everyone has different preferences. They ship fruits during the season to every state but California, if you want to save some $. We have been visiting Florida Keys for around 10 years, and after trying many other places, this ranks best, by a long shot! Some recommended varieties to try: Edward, Lemon Zest, Lemon Meringue, Angie, Orange Sherbert, Fruit Punch, Triple Sec, Coconut Creme, Sweet Tart, and Carrie.

The mango festival at Fairchild is up there on the list, but it is only one weekend in July (13th/14th this year), so you’d have to plan your trip around it:

Fairchild has been celebrating mangos during the Mango Festival for nearly 30 years. It’s a weekend-long celebration of the sweet and delicious King of Tropical Fruit!

Fairchild is home to The Tropical Fruit program and the world’s largest mango collection. Our annual Mango Festival is a celebration of the more than 400 varieties of mangos in our prized collection, and it all culminates in a dazzling weekend filled with mango madness.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I got a box of mangoes from a member of TFF this week from south FL. I’d say the mango season was looking great before this deluge, but I wonder if they’ll be watery and cracking after this.

My box was harvested just before, at least. So far I’ve had one Pickering and one Sein Ta Lone (aka “Guava”), 16 more left to ripen:

The neighbors trees fruit still look fine, but they are still pretty green. I’m in SFL for work, and it really didn’t feel like anymore rain then it was when I was growing up. Its just late, usually it was when we were getting out of school (June 4thish). The dooryard mangos don’t seem too affected, not sure about larger farms though.

I think it was very localized. Hallandale got over 20 inches this week, Miami Shores got almost 2 ft in a couple days, while Coral Gables got “only” 8 inches. It was a matter of where the heavy bands set up because they were almost stationary and raining for hours at a time.
