I might get a honey jar and sugarcane fruit from first year bare root trees from chinesereddate.
Honey jar: it looks big as a sweet cherry already not too bad!

V. lucky is still of excellent quality, despite the small fruits(almost all our trees and potted specimens produced smallish fruits this year, not sure why). Booty fruits continue to have great quality fruits as well.
Bounty continues to be better in quality than its mom(ant admire). Kinky has produced bigger fruits this year compared to its first fruits last year, and continues to be better than its mother(burntridge’s contorted). Kinky’s fruits are now more similar to jfae’s contorted in eating quality
Nasty is kinky’s sister(with nasty thorns and pronounced crooks) and only this year that it produce some fruits, which, like kinky’s, are of better quality than their mother’s . Nasty seems to have more tart than its sister. The sisters are currently nursing a second crop, which looking foward to sample!

Pasas seems to be not as affected by hot weather as other jujus, bearing fruits that have no bitter after-taste, and seem to be more juicy(even in extremely hot weather) than other jujus. Its fruits also have a pleasant tart to it.

My fruits are really big this year. We’ve had much cooler than average temps and a lot more rain!

Li. (I have really LARGE hands)

This whole tree was falling over.

And!!! The fig beetles have found my jujubes. I HATE THESE THINGS! They remind me of zombies attacking and devouring a slow human with a feeding frenzy and if you disturb them from their eating they dive bomb you with their loud buzzing!! YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!

Wow! That second photo is really impressive, congratulations! :+1:

those beetles are no bueno, i hope those beetles were merely due to the uncharacteristically rainy season, much like with grasshoppers here in vegas…

most of our jujus are somewhat smallish this year, maybe it was the extreme heat this summer preceded by a long winter.
and vegas glitzy seems to have been most affected(be they grafts or the self-rooted seedling), and behaving like a true stone fruit --bearing densely but with tiny fruits… The largest fruit it had was the first fruit it produced, bearing just one fruit 3 yrs ago…

enough of bad news… Below is the self-rooted chico cutting from last year, finally launching a sizeable upright, shown here as a green stem growing diagonally to the left from beneath the rosette of deciduous fruiting stems.

Those beetles have been residents over the last few years but since my big fig tree bit the dust in the vortex they are “branching out” to other venues.

those beetles bug me, for a lack of a better term… I hope they will be transient and sporadic pests, and not permanent…

2 pics of vegas uvas below. It is a ~2 ft tall 4 yr old seedling(from sugar cane) on its first crop ever. It evidently produces sizeable fruits considering its age and potted condition. Fruit quality in vegas summers seem to be better than that of its parent as it didn’t have the bitter aftertaste of sc in >115F

below is a pic of ~3 yr old vegas pasas, which is among the juiciest jujus despite being potted. Has a pleasing sweet-sour flavor. Great as fresh as it is as dried. Hopefully fruits size up with time.

and below are comparisons of vegas -born jujy fruits. Bounty and sweetie are sisters from ant admire seeds. And both are better eating quality than their mother(in vegas summers), and confident they can get much bigger than HJ… Lucky is from sihong seed. Fruits this year are smaller, but probably just due to ambient conditions.
It produced fruits longer than 1" last year

Raf,

Great looking Vegas series jujube of your own creation. I liked the dark color of Vegas Kinky and Bounty and hope they taste good. Have you taste the Vegas Uvas yet? Looks like Vegas Uvas, Kinky, Booty, Lucky and Bounty are decent sizes.

so far, V. kinky, lucky, pasas, and booty are must-haves, having been assessed over at least two growing seasons, and being productive enough and with fruits sizeable enough versus their respective thorn-lengths/degree of thorniness. Btw, kinky and bounty have fruit quality that exceeds that of their mothers( in las vegas conditions).

vegas baby, candy and glitzy make great dried dates, but the degree of thorniness vs fruit-size ratio makes me think they are only good broadcasting as budwood, and not as self-rooted specimens.

vegas uvas is already a peer of its mom(sugar cane) in fruit quality borne in vegas conditions, and its fruits are rather large for a first crop and being restricted by potted condition, so i predict it being a must-have not just as budwood, but as self-rooted specimens which may be used as rootstock. While i like candy and baby, i wouldn’t advise “releasing” them into areas with ample rainfall, as they will likely end up producing thorny thickets should they start suckering. Conversely, would be so thrilled to release self-rooted sihong/chico/li/sherwood/booty/lucky/kinky to as many acres of idle land here in usa/temperate mexico/europe, creating long-lasting food forests/carbon sinks.

probably should ask bill gates to set aside field stations for self-rooted jujus-- him being the world’s greatest hoarder of farmland. Anyone know his cel# ?

self-rooted li with a strong upright and bearing its first fruit at one year of age(pardon the volunteer egyptian spinach obscuring the left lower portion )

below, vegas nasty showing signs of promise, bearing a second crop this yr at 1.5 ft tall and limited by its 3 gallon pot.

Does anyone know if this jujube is XC 815?

i don’t think anyone here has even heard of XC815, myself included… Is that yours? Am sure a lot of people here are curious…
maybe seduced, lol

Cliff England had XC 815, but I never saw him post a photo of the fruit.

This photo is one I took a few years ago in the orchard of a woman in California.

FYI, I have finally had a few Orange Beauty fruits. It is excellent!!! And really nice size too! I had to graft it to an older tree to get fruit but the wait was worth it. Thank you!

Good deal! Now try one dried.

It will be interesting to see how big the fruit will get. My tree has always been in a pot and the fruit has usually been the same size as Sugar Cane or slightly larger, but I have speculated that the fruit might get bigger when the tree was planted in the ground. These are normal size for my potted tree -

I think mine are bigger. And…. I really do have large hands……:flushed::joy:

Had my first jujube today. Picked when dark brown on 3/4 of it. Had zero taste, and consistency of foam. What am I doing wrong???
