My Montmorency is on Myrobalan? Sp? Help someone and I. Keep it to eight feet tall. It’s still huge as I let it become wide. The cherries are divine. Once they are red if you like a bit of tartness they are delish right off of the tree. I eat them while I pick. I have thousands this year on one tree. So excited!
Yes, I got mine from Raintree on G5. I will post a picture of it tomorrow. I would say it is about 10’ tall and on 5th leaf. I could have kept it shorter but I need slightly taller trees to get past the deer height. I need to thin it out a little more as the center is becoming too dense.
We planted what we thought was a montmorency cherry. Its in fact, a cherry that doesnt make a good pie or preserves. Its very tart, and not very juicy. The birds clean it up, so its just a pretty yard tree.
I just replanted my Montmorency tree plus I’m trying to grow a Black York tree, both of my other cherry trees got knocked over by a storm that came through about a month ago so have to start over and both of those trees were loaded.
I got montmorency on G5 for size but also for the extra cold hardiness and snap frost protection. It is only in its 2nd leaf and has stayed small and put on fruit this year.
Hi I do not want to hijack the thread but I have a question. I purchased a Montmorency cherry 3 weeks ago. It is still in the pot and I was waiting until the fall to put into the ground. It has a number of yellow leaves. Do you think it is getting too much water or not enough water. Do you have a idea why it has a number of yellow leaves. I wonder if I should place it in the ground now. Thanks for your help.
I probably would. It’s still May so there is a lot of time for it to get established before winter. You will need to keep it watered until it roots in. Spread the roots out as much as possible when you plant. If it’s really rootbound that may be difficult.
It’s very easy to underwater or overwater a potted tree and symptoms look pretty much the same.
Thanks.
Ok. Thanks.
I really do like montmorency but when push comes to shove and im busy with picking cherries i only ate half a dozen montmorency, none of the northstar , a couple dozen nanking cherries ( love the sour sweet taste), tons of carmine newell cherries! Maybe i will pick them but its likely i wont this year.
We have a supposedly semi dwarf montmorency cherry in our yard, that has had fruit for several years, but not good to eat fruit. We’ve just let the birds take them… But this year, when all the other trees have struggled with the late, wet, cold spring …this tree is glorious, with bright red, jucy cherries!
A neighbor has an old montmorency tree and has agreed to let me pick it. the fruit is bright red, with some that are obviously underripe yet- the red fruit are astringent though! Is this normal or are they all underripe?
They are ripe. They only taste good when cooked and generally need sweetener. You can actually use them a little underripe but the taste isn’t as strong.
I made up my first batch of cherry gunk from ours last night. Sooooo tasty. I like to add a bit of amaretto and vanilla extract to it. It really enhances the flavour.
Good to know, thanks! Ill go ahead picking them asap. Some have brown rot so i had better get on it.
Any brown rot on them? Any idea if the tree is sprayed?
There is rot on some, not many. The fruit on this tree looks better than mine as it is in full sun and mine is not.
I do not think the owners spray, as they haven’t paid much attention to the tree at all. It’s very old and gnarly looking and has not been picked for years. I have thought about asking many years, but for whatever reason I haven’t. The birds have always taken them.
Yeah that is pretty good considering how wet it has been. I think that is the gold standard cherry for pies. I have a meteor seedling that is about 12 feet tall now…never holds fruit…and now all the leaves are yellow and the end leaves are all curling with some sort of leaf curl! It’s beyond bad. The poor tree gets sun, but it is in a corner of a fenced in yard with little airflow…soon to be firewood.
my mont. was down to 1 live branch left when i bought it on clearance at TSC. not sure if its grafted or on own rootstock but it has put on 3ft of new growth since last spring. its in full sun in the middle of the yard so it has good airflow. its also surrounded by my carmine jewel , juliet, romeo and lutowka cherries so they all should have excellent pollination.
This year I got a pretty good crop without netting. I hung up lots of very long strips of reflective tape plus a fake owl and a fake hawk on poles. In past years I used shorter strips of tape, they don’t seem to work as well as long ones that get close to the ground – create a “fence” looking thing around the outside of the tree with it.
My tree is a total pain to get a net over, I have a big enough net but it has not come out for several years now.
