I’m thinking of getting an owl. They have them that move their heads too. My electric fencing kept the coons and even the chipmunks out. The birds ate about half.
Here’s the tree. More rot on it than I expected, after getting up into the branches, (husband in the branches actually
) maybe 30%.
It has mushrooms growing on some upper branches

Thank you!
This is the right answer! put a bird bath near it. they dont go for cherries, they want water. give them water and you will not need a bird netting . i have a 7 year old cherry tree. It becomes impossible to net the tree after 6th year, its so huge.
So, better is to share and survive. i let them eat cherries and give them plenty of water. they dont eat much. A few is okay, birds also eat the japanese beetles grubs from the lawn in spring time, so definately invite birds in your garden.
in return, they dont touch my asian pears, apricots, peaches, plums , blueberries, blackberries, currants etc etc.
And yes, this is the most beatiful tree in my backyard. amazing in spring and winter color is exactly of a Raging FIRE , so marvelous especially when the leaves drop!
I made sure to not plant anything that competes it in terms of looks and thus it stands out in the whole neighbourhood during spring and fall times!
On deal for now at $18.16… probably wont last long.
A few years ago I added 5 grafts of Montmorency to my Lapins cherry.
In year 2 last year… we got 1 cherry. It was delicious.
This year all 5 grafts bloomed well and have set several fruit.
I started a Montmorency tree in my new orchard last year… it grew well, 6 ft, nice branches. I was hoping it might bloom this spring but it did not.
How many years does it normally take a Monmorency to start fruiting?
Thanks

3 to 5 years.
My Montmorency with white blossoms in the picture took about 4-5 years. By that time, I invited friends to pick cherries, as there were more than I could ever eat or make jam or sorbet!
@mrsg47 … beautiful trees there.
Glad I added those 5 grafts of Monty to my older Lapins cherry a few years back.
Looks like we are going to get several cherries off them this year.
The Monty out in my new orchard is 7 ft tall growing well (start of year 2) and is in full sun. It is shaping up to look just like yours.
Looking forward to seeing it bloom like that.

That is great. By the way, it was a two person job, but I covered the entire tree in white tulle to keep out the birds and squirrels. ![]()
I sewed the fabric together on the tree. A very tight mesh.
Fascinating that you sew it on the tree, can you provide more details? Do you see together strips and then sew the bottom together?
my monty, that was severely damaged by -40 3 yrs ago, is slowly coming out of it. most of the tree was removed due to death and damage. the 1 branch surviving is finally starting to put on growth again and has about 50 blooms for the 1st time in 3 years. im hoping this continues as its my favorite sour cherry. i nearly pulled it and replaced several times but something told me the roots from the previously 7ft tree would allow it to heal. looking for ward to the cherries again even though the tree is only 4ft. hopefully i can graft sweet cherry to it again. i had 2 cultivars on it before it froze.
You might try evans that are frequently grown in Canada. It is a seedling of montmorency. The taste is very much the same, though i think you might gain some cold tolerance. They are a great pie cherry i like very much as well.

I considered it awhile back but with 5 cherry trees producing i really dont need another. lutowka rose polish cherry is going to produce its 1st crop after voles killed the mother 3 years ago and as monty gets bigger, its crop should increase.
Yes, but not strips. They were large squares of tulle. After sewing, I then gathered the tulle around the trunk and wrapped heavy duty silver tape around the fabric to seal out the squirrels.
Can anyone comment on when Montmorency blooms relative to WhiteGold? Before or after and about by how much? I know they are both self fertile. I have a small backyard and front yard spot for them, but the backyard gets a few degrees colder and I want the later blooming one there. I can’t find any chart online comparing them
Have both here, but don’t remember the bloom times (relatively close). Can say that neither have any problems fruiting and monty will be the smaller of the trees if that helps any.
