'Monty's Surprise' Apple

Is there anywhere in the USA to order Monty’s surprise scions?

Thanks

Does anyone have the diseases profile for Monty’s Surprise? I’m mainly interested in Cedar Apple Rust.

Thanks

Here is a poor picture of a Monty Surprise I grafted last year to to Bud 9 rootstock. Just getting scaffolding branches to select this year. Very healthy, so far no disease or insect issues on leaves. Western Washington.

Looks really good and healthy. Nice job grafting this tree. Mine looks more stubby, so far. I should take a photo of mine.

Planted one 2022 on Geneva 222. It’s 7ft now. Has 3 apples. Haven’t pruned it but will this winter. Healthy so far.

Sounds like I may have picked the wrong rootstock to put my Monty’s Surprise on.

Nice looking tree. Glad you got some fruit that early. Let us know how it tastes when the fruit gets ripe.

MS apples are reported to be Huge.

Ive had it for 3 years, no sign of CAR at all so it must be fairly resistant

seems to be the only place to buy them, i got three of them and am happy with the seedlings, i think they did a good job cultivating and grafting them.

Here’s a photo of my Monty’s Surprise apple tree. It has not grown any since I planted it in 2022. It has been about 40-42" during these two years.

Looks like grass might be out-competing the tree for water/nutrients?

tree looks really healthy…it looks to me like it just needs to be pruned this winter and it should take off next year. And i agree, i would put a bunch of newspaper or cardboard around the trunk to kill back grass and put some heavy mulch down but not against the trunk to avoid trunk rotting. What rootstock is it? If its M111 I wouldnt stake it either

I weed whip the area around it. I took the photo just before I cleared the grass around it. I did put some mulch around it after I weed whipped it. We have had horrible drought conditions this summer. I put out 6 new apple trees. It has been so dry I lost one even with all the watering I did. It did not have a very good set of roots to begin with so it did not surprise me. I hate losing a tree because of something I cannot control.

I stake all my trees for the first 3-4 years. Just to protect them from being beaten up by the deer stomping around until the trunk gets thicker. Also sometimes the trunk is not straight and I stake them so they grow straighter. It is on a M111 rootstock.
Thanks for all the suggestions here.

Thanks for posting this article.

Your #3 suggestion- how much do you cut off- how tall do you make it?

I cut about one inch, i want the height. just to motivate other scions to start branching out.

I did that when I first got the tree in 2022. I will give that another try next spring. To see if that spurs some better growth. Thanks for the info.
