Most disease resistant Limbertwigs

I’m wondering if people with experience growing Limbertwig apples can chime in on their disease resistance. I have young trees of the following if anyone can especially comment on these:

Black Limbertwig (I hear this is the most dx resistant)
Caney Fork Limbertwig
Swiss Limbertwig
Myer’s Royal Limbertwig
Red Royal Limbertwig
Royal Limbertwig (has CAR susceptibility)
White Limbertwig
Golden Limbertwig
Victoria Limbertwig
Smoky Mountain Limbertwig
Brushy Mountain Lmbertwig

Thanks for any insights - there’s not much info at all online to be found.

And for love of Pete’s Pickled Pizza; Black Limbertwig is not Red Limbertwig like Old Fashioned Limbertwig is not either of the earlier…lol They are all unique from each other.

I added 3 grafts of Black LT last spring.

This winter/spring… got more scions of Black LT… and Myers Royal LT, Red Royal LT, Royal LT.

We dont have scab here in the south east TN … never seen that.

We do have CAR… of 7 established apple trees only Gold Rush really reacts badly to it… enough to slow down growth a bit. It still fruits.

We do have Fire Blight… i have lost several 2, 3 year old apple starts to FB.

How are the different Limbertwigs with insects… CM, OFM, etc ? I hear they are very hard apples until ripe… which should deter insects some.

I am a no sprayer… well I might spray a little spinosad… but that is about it.

Old Fashioned LT is hard and care free. Not the prettiest with the black blotching.

@greyphase Revisiting this post…wondering if Rick can chime in for any recommendations for the most disease resistant Limbertwigs. In my case, im looking for ones that can be grown without sprays (not caring about insects, most about disease). Thanks!

I haven’t sprayed any of my limbertwigs for disease and have had very few problems. Two years ago I had fire blight run through my orchards and the limbertwigs came through better than most of my other varieties. They are all proving to be a tough dependable tree in my orchards.

We have Old Fashioned Limbertwig, Smokey Mtn. Limbertwig, Red Royal LT, and Swiss LT. Old Fashioned LT does not really ripen fully here (SW WI) and is somewhat scab prone. Smokey Mtn. has been a nice annual bearer and seems to resist scab, gets Cedar apple rust on leaves but not on fruit. Red Royal Limbertwig has been disease free. Swiss LT looks pretty good, but some scab. We do spray our orchard with organic sprays, and fireblight is not as big an issue here as some places (although this year was bad). No FB on the LTs yet. Smokey Mtn. LT has good flavor, very classic apple flavor and is the earliest to ripen. Red Royal is one of my favorite apples, very interesting weird flavor, aroma reminds me of Paw Paw fruit.

Red Royal LT was a favorite of the late, great Lee Calhoun, who grew hundreds of Southern apple varieties.

Thinking of adding a limbertwig scion or two. What are the pollination times, are they all the same? Can’t seem to find much info.
