HOw do they compare to Baya Marissa?

They are less acid… but even so i like Baya Marisa too. I’m almost picking them too.

I had to pick them two weeks ago. They kept falling from the heat and drought. But it seems that they will be sweeter - while it’s not a brix value, the hornets found them this year.

Always called this one a red delicious. Thoughts? Tree is probably close to 50 years old. Makes it younger than the 100+ year old heirlooms down the street

Not quite ripe. Little starchy- but crisp and not yet to mealy stage.

Maybe you have one of those less purple more delicious olde versions. Check the Wikipedia article on RD.

Maybe! I don’t know. Here’s a picture from 2016. Same tree. But 2 weeks earlier (we’ve had weird weather this year). How’s the rain treating your area?

Locally, we’ve only had 5 days of heavier rain. I kept watching radars and we were lucky by a margin of 30-50km. I only had to right-up one young Asian pear tree thrice. Lots of fruit on the ground and nuts in the neighbour’s yard. But no floods. So grateful for that…

As for. RD, it seems to me that the colour depends on the amount of UV light it gets. After rainy summers, ours is paler and in the years that we’ve had reports of a large ozone hole above us for weeks, I got the idea that the Black Diamond apple is just a Red Delicious grown at a high altitude.

Could be. But we get lots of UV up here - 6000 ft. I like your idea of older variety. Sure could be. Probably put in when … or befire house built in 1976. But we have had major smoke last two weeks too. I think that may have shielded some of it.
