My container fruit jungle

I finally set up drip irrigation so I feel like I have more time now to share what fruits I’m growing now that I’m not dragging my hose around the yard every day  I grow mostly in pots as my plan was to find a sizable property to grow the plants but some are starting to get big now. Anyway, here are some of the plants that I’m growing.

Barbados Cherry on its second year. Variety is Florida Sweet. Growing this mostly for the vitamin C benefits. Thinking of freezing them once I get enough and give to my son during the sick season .

Emerald blueberry in a 15g pot. Lat year I got quite a bit of fruit on my Blueberries and added a couple more varieties.

Persimmon in the foreground and a McDill white sapote in the background both in 15g pots. It was in a shadier spot before which is why I think it grew so tall. I will cut it down and graft a few seedlings that I have been growing. There is also a Younghan’s Gold white sapote that I grafted last year but not sure you can see it.

GA866 and Shanxi Li in 25g growbags. These will be going on their 3rd year in these containers. They were Dave Wilson bare root trees and I just potted them straight into 25g growbags. I have had decent crops from both on their first years. Last year the GA866 produced 200-300 pieces of fruit, which was great lol.

Chico in a 15g pot. I will probably put this in a 25g grow bag as well just so they look the same.

Diospyros decandra I adopted. It was about 7 years old or so.

One of the two rows of citrus. I have about 14 or 15 in 15g containers. I have had better results in plastic over growbags for citrus for some reason. Like, much better results. These are now going on their 3rd year.

Some more citrus.

Dormant mulberries. Mostly in 15g pots, but they want to be in much bigger ones.

Maui breaking dormancy. It has been the earliest for me. I don’t typically get much sun or heat now so the fruit isn’t the best.

Avocados in 25g grow bags on the left, and 15g pots on the right. They are all holding some fruit, the 25g are now entering their 4th year. The 15g on their 3rd.

Stewart is my most productive tree, but it is because the rootstock is genetically superior. The tree was much bigger than the others at the nursery. Rats do get some fruit, but I have had quite a bit this year. Tree held around 50 fruit.

Papayas from a fruit at the store. They are in tree pots. The ones I planted in ground, and in 5g pots, are doing much worse. A couple have already died like this.

Mulberry rootstock that I rooted earlier. Milk crates are a good way to store tree pots and the smaller liners .

Younghan’s Gold white sapotes that I grafted in spring.

Sharwil holding fruit. Excited to finally try it this year. Tree has about 10 pieces, I think.

Issai mulberry also broke dormancy. I had planned on taking scions but it broke earlier than I expected, along with Austurk and many others. It has been an unusually warm winter and many mulberries are waking up. Although it still gets to the 40Fs at night.

I’ll post some more as the season moves along. Let me know if you’d like to see something specific .

are you have to prune the roots in either the bags or plastic pots? what size/brand are your tree pots in the milk crates?

I don’t root prune when I up pot but these bigger trees in 25g containers need to either go up or root prune. I don’t think I will go higher than 25g so will see how root pruning goes lol.

The milk crates I get locally either from offer up or facebook marketplace. I try to get them for $3 or $4 a piece.

they are very handy! what about the tree pots that i noticed inside the milk crates? 4x4x Stuewe and Sons?

Yup, those are from Stuewe. I bought a bunch a couple years ago and still going through them. Same with the deepots, also from Stuewe.

Myro 23c tree sent out this sucker and for whatever reason it never went dormant so I separated it today and will graft onto it. Trying to root out the rest of the branches that I cut back

Does anyone have experience rooting Myro? I put two of the tops of the rootstocks into a pot and one of them rooted fairly easily.

The Myro 23c sucker has survived. Was looking questionable but I see quite a few roots coming out the bottom now. Grafted a plum from my friend :+1:.

Will try to root out the top part to create an infinite tree loop .

The cuttings seem promising. Will dig one out in a week or so to see if there are any roots.

I got a bunch of yang meis too. Hopefully they live. Looked like some RKN on one group.

How do you move those 25 gallons around? I have a couple trees in that size and it’s getting to be a pain moving them even with a dolly.

I very rarely move the 25gs. They are in their longterm spots. If its more than just positioning a bit, I use the dolly. For the grow bags, I have to call my brother to grab the handle on the other side and we move it together lol.

I need a garden helper ha. Keep us updated on root pruning those 25 gallons. I need ideas on how to tackle this. I have read of people using an engine hoist.

Lol very true.

I have seen someone use a giant tripod type hoist. It was very basic. An engine hoist sounds like a great idea!
