My First Jujube tree

I have a single Honey Jar in the ground for 5 years now. It has fruited ever year since planting and i doubt there are any other jujubees in our newer subdivision. Very good tree to have except when it rains a lot near harvest time. It cracks and taste pretty bland when it is rainy. I bought it from GrowOrganic. Anyways, good luck.

My honey jar flowered for two years and never set fruit. Once I grafted Sugar Cane, I had fruit… Maybe there are multiple varieties around being called Honey Jar. Mine was from EL.

So it needs a pollinating partner.

Yours could be a special Honey Jar. That goes against a study @BobVance posted and observations from gardeners like us.

On a more skeptical note, are your sure if your ā€œHoney Jarā€ is a real Honey Jar? Any pic, please?

I can’t be sure if there are other jujubees near but most all yards are ā€œmanicuredā€ with not many plantings of good use. These are Summer 2022 photos. Earlier years i ll try to get off my old phone or locate in previous postings.

Well i may not have that special Honey Jar after all. I grafted and removed a Sugarcane scion to it. Graft in spring 2020 and removal that winter. I am hoping i new enough to remove at the graph, but it certainly raises the possibility i may have left a bit on. I doubt it as the Sugarcane was much more vigorous and i have not seen such growth return. Nor have found any Sugarcane fruit after removal. Second point i may have not considered is suckering. I have allowed 1 sucker each of the last 2 years to grow out to about 30". They do flower a little and are within 15 ft of the mother. I will check the removed graph spot again and the sucker will be gifted this winter. Still maybe someone could have one out of my view. Apologies for my derelict declaration. Poor information is as bad as no information.

Where did you get the wire that you put around your jujube tree? I am afraid I might have deer in my backyard.

The thing is I don’t think I have enough space for 2 jujube trees. This is how much space I have left in my Backyard. Do you think it will be too crowded for 2 trees where I put the yellow X? If that is the case , then I will put Li in the pot.

Suckering or flowers from your rootstock can definitely be a good pollination strategy if you don’t want to add other varieties. Sugar Cane has been vigorous for me too.

I’d say the sunniest spot you find the more fruit you’ll end up with! I’ll definitely defer to Bob on this but in my opinion I’d go for both trees with proper pruning. It all depends on how much you put into them. Maybe put the more vigorous tree in the less sunny location? The way I currently view it, Sugar Cane is good but definitely the pollinator partner for Honey Jar, so I’ll maintain both accordingly on my tree.

A couple questions: which way is South? Also, how many feet are there between that tree on the right and the fence on the left? How wide and tall do you expect the tree on the right to get?

Agreed

Even if the orientation you pictured is too tight, maybe they could be turned 90 degrees, and spaced about 10’ apart? I definitely prefer in-ground.

It was a roll of wire from home depot, I cut it up and rolled into a cage. You can make it as big or as small as needed.

What is the name of the wire? Is it something I can purchase on line?

I don’t know the measurement. I will have to measure tomorrow. See attached picture.

From the tree on the right to the fence is about 30 feet. The tree on the right will just be that size. I have that tree for 20 years already.

Everyone plants with a different plan, but my yard being small that is an eternity of space for me. I usually plant at about 6-10 feet intervals depending upon the type and how I plan to prune it. Definitely plenty of room for two but yes you will likely need to prune some, but it’s up to you, you could likely go with a two in one hole planting, but I am a noob with jujube having just got my first two this fall also. So I’m sure someone else could tell if one of the two you got grows much too vigorously for a two in one with the other one you got.

Thanks for your input. Also, we might be moving in 5 years so the kids can have better school location. So I am debating what to do.
