When you live on a clay hill like I do it does NOT symbolize “Fun!” :joy::joy:. We broke a rental PTO auger one time trying to dig a fence post hole!!

Let us know how it works my back would live me to figure out a better option and my wife thinks a skid loader in the side yard is going to use up too much space

Now you should take up ice fishing! Well, maybe with a different blade. Plenty of ice in your area I’m sure

Nice tool. I got one of those augers you put on a drill, but it doesn’t work much

That’s awesome! I started using an old 4 inch hand ice fishing auger. Quicker than digging but your arm still gets tired after awhile.

The augar is 18v cordless and I can take and use it in the yard and my orchard. I still haven’t tested it out.

I bought my first Earth Auger this year and now I own 3. Earth Augers are not 1 size fits all. if your planting 4" vegetable starts your going to want a 5" Auger. If you want to plant bulbs or between established plants you need a ones with smaller diameters.

I used the tiller head to weed and turn over my allotments at the community garden. Drains a full battery for an 8x4 box.

That is a nice setup. Thanks for showing it.

I haven’t seen one with a tiller option, Probably a lot easier than my hoe attached to my hands.

A good selection of drill augers are available on amazon these are the ones I have. The screw augers are very good as weeding tools also. I just walk around with the double long one and just poke all the dandelions and plantains i find. very satisfying.

Is that a 4" auger, Bill? How deep can it go?

I’d like an option for my 4" x 4" x 30" long Nursery Pots so no more hand digging.

Thanks

This auger is a ryobi 18v. It came with a 6" bit and I think that you can drill up to 30-32". Pretty sure it will work okay under good conditions such as no big rocks and moist soil.

Thanks, Bill.

When I first saw this thread, I thought these small augers wouldn’t have any application for me. But after further consideration, I think a small auger attached to a cordless drill might have application setting out our tomatoes (300-400 plants). Anything to speed the process would be helpful. Thanks for starting this thread Bill.

Does anyone use an auger to set out their tomato plants? If so, what size auger would you recommend? I’m thinking bigger is probably better because it loosens a larger patch of soil, but I don’t know. Any thoughts?

Also do these small augers pack the sidewall much? I know that is a complaint of using tractor driven augers to plant small trees. They glaze the sidewall so that the roots have a hard time penetrating the sidewall. Nevertheless, we frequently use a tractor driven auger to plant peach trees. Doesn’t seem to slow them down much here.

But tomatoes have a much weaker/more delicate root system. That’s why I’m wondering if anyone has used an auger for setting out their tomatoes?

Lastly, Bill this thread is relevant to gardening, as it offers a good option to digging holes. If you would like I can switch the category to the General Gardening category. But if your intent to put it in the Lounge was for a bit more privacy (so it’s not everywhere on the Web) I’m fine to leave it here as well.

Go ahead a switch it to gardening. The only reason that I put it into the lounge was to make sure it met our guidelines. I planted a shrub with it this morning and I have 20 okra plants to dig holes for. I’m sure it will also work for planting smaller fruit trees.

If you did a hole with a 3" auger it will be a 3" hole it wont pack or do anything to the side walls unless you carve it out which is why I suggest a 4" auger for a 3" start of a 4" for a 3" start. of course if you want to break the soil around the hole go big. The same diameter auger come in different lengths. If your going to do 300 plants you going to want to do it standing im sure. That’s why i bought the combo kit so I could weed from standing. The smaller ones I use in the flowers and garden. But they work for weeding too.
