My order from Bay Laurel Nursery

Whatcha think

ive heard some people have a lot of trouble with citation. I guess just double check that

What should I be concerned with exactly?

crown gall and bacterial canker mostly. and some incompatibility with peaches sometimes ?

I never had problems with citation, if there is no other stock I would just get it on citation.

Where are you? That olive won’t be hardy I don’t think.

Also if you don’t have other trees now you need a pollinator for the apple and sweet cherry and maybe some other things…

both those cherries should be self fertile, though improved with a partner.

I was going to say the same thing about the olive. I have tried arborqueana twice here in Seattle 8b and it has not done well thru the winter. I believe its cold hardiness is over stated.

Here is the thread where citation is debated:

The issue with Citation for peaches is it is more susceptible to viruses and crown gall. So it’s not an optimal rootstock and I wish Dave Wilson would stop using it. If I was a commercial grower I also would shy away from it. But if thats the only rootstock available for the peach you need I would just get it. I have a peach on Citation coming this spring myself, my Red Baron bit it (the old one was not on citation, I had grafted it to a seedling) and thats the only rootstock it is available on.

For plums there seems to be much less of an issue. I have several 25-year-old plums on Citation that are still going strong. None of my 25-year-old peaches are still alive but I looked at the past records and the Citation ones didn’t die a lot sooner on average. I have had maybe a dozen peach trees on Citation over the years.

Neither have I. My oldest trees are on citation which is not recommended for Michigan by MSU. I have come to like this rootstock. MSU is wrong it’s a good rootstock for Michigan.
I have a 12 year old peach tree on citation. Produces very well and easy to keep small. Lovell trees I have lost four of them. I bought two more on Lovell.

In dry conditions, Citation will induce early dormancy. That is a problem in my region. I like Bay Laurel though. I have ordered about 10/ 15 trees from them over the last 10 years. The orders have always come in good shape.

That’s good to hear! What did your orders look like?

They were very typical of a bare root fruit tree.

One complaint over the years I heard is they trim roots too much. I though have never had problems. All trees from them grew. I still have most. I lost some to a flood one year. Anything on citation lived. All others died of wet feet.
