Name that Loquat?

Does this look like a common named variety loquat?

The person that planted it was an elder lady from Hawaii. I haven’t met too many folks that loved their trees as much as she did. She moved out 3 years back and left another good neighbor this loquat tree amongst many other fruit trees. Anyways I told him I’d ask the pros on Growing Fruit if this looks familiar. The fruit are pretty good too when ripe. Thanks

Those look like the very delicious Loquats I ate on the way to school everyday in elementary school.

I’m about done with getting a Loquat going. Rabbits destroyed it last year. This year it tried to come back. So I caged it. Darned if they did not dig under and get it again.

Hey Danny sorry to hear that. These ones are pretty good. I’ve had quite a few around here and generally don’t like them. Wondering how easy they are to air layer?

Are you sure it isn’t just a landscaping loquat? It is a huge landscape tree here and they aren’t named varieties. Loquats as a whole (imo) just taste good, so even if its unnamed it can still have a great flavor.

I don’t have a clue but knowing her it’s something special. All her tree are pretty solid and pretty much her life. I hope she comes to visit again I’ll definitely ask her. The guy that bought her place is pretty lucky it came with many different trees.

Its a nice loquat tree. The fruits are not ripe yet. Looks like the white or yellow flesh loquats. They should taste sweet with a little bit of tartness. Many people like the taste of white flesh loquat, has much more than the normal Big Jim (orange flesh) which is just sweet.

Thanks! The critters seem to love these too. Tbh I’ve never been a huge fan of these but this one was pretty amazing. Peels pretty easy and texture of a nice melon. It reminded me of a melon with some nice citrus flavor and touch of vanilla. If I was to name it would be Orange Creamsicle because it reminded me of that.

Very nice, I would consider that flesh color to be white or yellow. You can tell if it is a white flesh, just peel the skin and the flesh should look white. But the white oxidizes quickly, 30 minutes so it will look darker later after it is peeled or cut. Check to see if the tree is grafted (bottom 24" from soil line). If you don’t see any graft union then it is a seedling probably. Then if you want to give it that name “Orange Creamsicle” then send me 4 scion cuttings so I can graft it on my multi-grafted tree to evaluate your fruit with the rest of my new Seedling Finds on the TFF forum. We have 28 new seedling finds on this list.

Either way, you can still name it what you like if it is a seedling tree. Your brix=15.5-16 is pretty good for loquats. I do have a few that goes to 30, but anything over 20 is great. Average brix=13 is normal for a ripe loquat.

I like all loquat fruits, but my preference is the white flesh, they usually have more flavor than just being sweet like most orange flesh loquats. Now Peluche and Imperiale are different, they also have a nice smell of something, floral or different than other orange flesh loquats I grow.

Also, the white or yellow flesh loquats are the ones with very high brix, many over 20, a few up to 30.

Cool thanks George I’ve seen some of those pretty amazing posts over at TFF which is probably why I had the urge to try these out. I have some friends always growing them and they’re always meh to not bad. This one wowed me and others but more or less after it was peeled to eat. Thinking the skin maybe slightly astringent. It was really fantastic and enjoyable to eat in the hot day. Also did notice it starting to oxidize as you mentioned. I only checked the brix on that one. I’ll check a few more slightly riper ones. The tree looks pretty old and is in the brunt of full sun here but will check for any graft union too.
