Navel Oranges -- how long can mature fruit hang on tree?

Hi,

I am in Santa Clara, CA. Goal is to be able to harvest my backyard navel oranges daily for 4-6 months. I have a 2 year old Washington Navel. I also have Gold Nugget and Owari Satsuma mandarins. But this is specifically about Navel Oranges.

1). Late Hanging Navels

2). I considered adding Late Lane Navel Orange.

  • Lane Late navel orange | Givaudan Citrus Variety Collection at UCR
  • “Lane Late navel orange, is a late maturing bud sport of Washington navel orange”
  • “The fruit matures four to six week later than the Washington navel orange”
  • Stores on the tree for several months after reaching maturity, before the quality deteriorates.

Based on above, seems like Washington Navel should provide “6 months on tree”.

Anyone in California with how long their backyard navel oranges hang?

It depends how sensitive your taste buds are. First, there is the issue of when they appear to be ripe vs when they are actually ripe. Second, there is the issue of when you think the flavor is degrading. In my experience, navel oranges are good for about 6 weeks after they reach peak flavor.
