Need ideas for DIY planter

I have a large stump left from a huge fir tree. I want to build a custom flower planter on top of it , just walls, no bottom. The idea is to have a long strip of some flexible material at lest 12 inches wide, make a loop from it and mimic the shape of the stump, leaving just an inch between the planter wall and the edge of the stump. Then I can use some stakes to hold it in place and fill with soil. I prefer it to be UV stable plastic, as metal is more difficult to work with and will eventually rust. Any ideas of what can be used for that project are greatly appreciated!

what is the diameter of the stump? eBay has all sizes of plastic barrels . should be one that will fit. could just cut out the bottom or cut it in half with a angle grinder. they last forever and you can paint it any color you want.

I need to measure exact, but I guess about 2.5 foot diameter, by it is not really round, so I wanted to mimic the shape… I have a large barrel I can use, but that would be my last resort, if I couldn’t find something better.

the hardware stores have sheets of vinyl that can be cut to size. they are very UV resistant. maybe that would work better for you.

Really? Never saw vinyl sheets, only siding, but I am not sure if it is flexible enough to make a loop from. What store did you see them in?

think lowes has it. they use it for soffet material. its pretty flexible. i bet most hardware stores would have it. if you can’t find it you could cut a ring from a garbage can that would probably do the same thing.

“leaving just an inch between the planter wall and the edge of the stump”

Was your idea to suspend the flex material an inch above the stump, using attachments, or was it to overlap the outer stump by one inch, and use that inch overlap to attach the flex material to the outside and top inch of stump?

I just wanted to make a planter that repeats the shape of the stump , but a little smaller so it is possible to use stakes around it
