Need your help with Goumi decision!

As the tile says I need the forum help/input!

My dilemma is where to plant Goumi plants!

My backyard about two acres planted in rows and the trees are planted every 12 feet apart.
The most planted in this rows are Persimmons, Jujubes and Figs among others.

My question is should I plant the Goumis in between the Persimmons the Jujubes? Or figs?

Thanks in advance
Ruben

I put things like Currants and other small bush fruits in the flower beds against the house. The side of the house also has a little less deer traffic.

That make sense!

My question or concern is since Goumi are nitrogen fixers!

What impact would have if planted in between the trees.

Which trees would benefit from the Goumis?

And which ones would be affected by the Goumis because of too much nitrogen!

I’m sure there may be some benefit, but it’s not going to be like spreading fertilizer. Also, they are using up other nutrients in the same area. If there was any real noticeable benefit to it everyone would be saying throw a goumi next to it. I’d just put it where you want it.

I just don’t know if it would impact the trees near by on any way.
For example @TNHunter lost his apple trees that were next to the Goumis due to FB.

if you planted them at regular tree distances i dont think it would affect them at all. i have a sweet scarlet goumi in between 2 sour cherries and they are growing the same as other cherries grown in other rows. they are 10ft apart.

Great!! That’s what I wanted to know, I would be planting them in between two trees, the trees are 12 feet apart. So the Goumi would be right at 6 feet in between two trees.

perfect!

@Ruben … my two goumi bushes … red gem, sweet scarlet… were planted in 2020.

They are easily 4-5 ft wide now and each spring I prune them back down to 8 ft (about as high as I can reach).

They put on 3-4 ft of mostly upward growth each year.

I had my 3 apple trees spaced out about like you are planning…

I have had best I remember 6 apple trees and 6 pear trees die of fireblight here… since 2001.

So 9 of those died of FB with no goumi present.

Some have told me I have rich soil… or perhaps I need to minimize or completely eliminate fertilizer for my apples and pears.

Slower growth… helps minimize fire blight.

After year 2… my new apples and pears are getting no fertilizer in my new orchard. Nothing but wood chips.

Just in case… I am not planting goumi near them either.

Thanks for clarifying that Trev, I was under the impression that your trees die to FB due to the Goumis because too much nitrogen.

Thank you all for your input! I’m much better knowing what to do now.
