A bit bummed on this, Ive been awaiting to see if they produce a slicer. They just made a striped version of the OG purple tomato, a slightly larger one and then an orange tomato.
I also dont like that they seemingly havent patented the beta tomato but are still saying you cant sell the fruit or use it as parent in breeding, though I dont know if i really want to get into that conversation, it feels worth it to flag it.
I have an accidental cross with the orig cherry one they made. Might grow out some F2s next year to see if get anything large and purple (it crossed with a larger tomato similar to Black Tula). This year it was medium sized , chocolate+purple combo exterior color and purple interior.
Thick skin, but not too delicious.
Maybe that chocolate flavor genes will shine through in F2.
Is the orange beta carotene one GMO? Their FAQ only mentions the original purple tomato and a “Limited Edition” Disney Vault one called “Empress.”
Sun Gold is kind of orangey and I only spent $2 for a pack of too many seeds to use while they’re still viable. I imagine it’s got lots of beta carotene or something similar.
Important to mention sungold is an f1 variety. So if these are stable for the purpose of seed saving that does call for a higher price. Not sure if this high of a price.
Its mostly a health thing vs a flavor thing. Anthocyanins are super good for you. Though i recognize not everyone is that into this, just explaining why im interested.
Ive disliked every purple tomato or pepper that i’ve grown. Tomatoes too firm and seem to not ripen to a slightly soft stage (go from hard to rotting with no in-between stage) and/or not great flavor. Peppers lack of flavor. Hoping some hybrids change that.
I think eventually they’ll make a slicer. Looks like they’re on their way to creating bigger tomatoes with the same concept overall.
Was hoping to save my plant and overwinter it this year but my ex stole it along with my other plants. I have to possibly start over everything next year
If anyone buys the seeds, can i bug 2 of each off of you lol, as a “community” member haha… i have so many tomato seeds and don’t wanna go hunt down the plants again next season.
