My dearly beloved significant other, hereinafter to be referred to as “Ma”, “Mrs. Hull” or “That Woman Who Lives in My House”, depending, made the mistake of mentioning that maybe we should have another set of good nippers so that I wouldn’t have to open the safe for my Felcos when she needed to trim something. In my great and generous magnitude I deigned to order a pair of ThornX to share with her. And since I was also of a mind to have a good pocket saw I added a fine-tooth Silky folding model, http://www.amazon.com/Silky-Folding-Landscaping-POCKETBOY-342-17/dp/B0014CC5RO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 if you want to see.
The ThornX seem to be pretty decent knockoffs of Felco # 2’s- a very slightly clunkier feel being the only negative I have at first impression. Took me a minute or two to learn to manage the lock and will take a little more time for it to feel natural, but these are a heckuva buy at $20.00.
The saw is a treat. My only complaint is that I don’t like the color of the handle, a bright lemon yellow, and even that will serve to make it harder to leave behind. The feel of the handle is solid, and sure (in the pictures it looks like it might be like Corona’s hollow grip but it isn’t) and it’s truly sharp. The teeth are just a mite too fine for some work, but the cut is beautiful and the blade profile is thin enough that you can get into right spots. It has two positions for the blade. Cuts on the pull stroke, of course. It comes with a plastic case that doesn’t impress me yet, but that’s because I find it so easy to slip it into the tool pocket of my work pants and see no reason for it, except that I store the saw in it!
In fact I don’t do enough pruning to justify these toys, but one day I’ll be able to pull one of them out of my pocket and make a perfect cut for some admirer, and that will make it all worthwhile.
