It’s a great idea but I think he’s using the wrong type of rope for that and the wrap around his roots might actually be a knot which could strangle it eventually.
I’d cut an 6” or so strip off of an old bedsheet, roll it and lay it down directly under the roots, then fill soil on top. It looks like a good idea if you want a self waterer, but you also need to water it well the first time after planting, even if your self watering setup will be enough later. I might try this for a seedling bed attached to a basin with a rain catch.
On the subject of China, China is restoring its deserts with Sea Berry (sea Buckthorn Berry) and this is where they’re growing them to be a productive fruit plantation! Can you imagine commercial scale fruiting in an area like this? They fix nitrogen and create soil with their broad root system too.
