Cliff said this tree was “V. Derevyanko” in a comment on Facebook. Ive seen it called Nakita 4 on this forum and yeah that taller than wide description doesnt match this tree.
The tree looks great whatever it is.

Preston, the photo in the original thread starter looks more like the V Derevyanko fruit in the video Ockoo Farm just put out on hybrid Ukrainian persimmons. I was at the orchard tour today and Nikita 4 looks very similar to Nikitskaya Bordovaya (Nikita’s Gift).
I picked up a grafted V. Derevyanko from Clifford today too, which I am extremely excited to plant. Nikita 4 is now on my list for scion for next year.
I agree. The Nakita 4 looks a lot like Nakita. The leaf and calyx is very similar.
V. DEREVYANKO fruit looks a lot like Dar Sofiyivky imo.
I have the DS from Dax and a graft of VD and they dont appear to be the same variety. The DS from Dax has no fuzz on the branches and the VD has a little bit. The VD leaves fold in sort of a taco shape and the DS from Dax does not.
Yes. You described their leaves exactly right. Lots of hybrids has pubescence hairs on the back of their leaves and stems but Dar S. is like 93.75% Kaki but inherited the cold hardiness from the DV parent by backcrossed, and Jt-02 is 50/50 DV X Kaki that had almost no hairs on the back of their leaves.

Any fruit or flowers from your DS yet Tony? My trees are getting big but didn’t flower this season. Hoping to see fruit in 2025 and confirm if its really DS. Has anyone had fruit from this one yet? I know many members have it now. One thing i noticed is the DS was the last persimmon to come out of dormancy. I have one planted right next to my Nakitas Gift and a larger one on the other side of the yard and both came out of dormancy after the threat of frost was over so that is a good trait if it continues.
Correction: some of the leaves on DS from Dax do have the taco shape but most are flat.
DS
My DS just grafted and planted this Spring. It grew to 3 feet and no flower yet. I have heard that La Nina will keep the weather mild this winter so it should take off again next Spring 2025. Hopefull it will have some flowers. I got the DS from Dax so it should be the real deal.
Tony
Nikita #4. My potted graft died (graft not the tree) so hopefully the in ground make it through our coming winter. Last winter low was only -4°F.
Nikita#4. Grew 3 feet tall since Spring thanks to Urea Nitrogen 46-0-0. They will be tested in Z5 Omaha.
Tony
Here is my Nikita #4 X Open pollinated from Cliff England seed.
My DS was also late to come out of dormancy. I have grafts in a few different microclimates but the effect on time to emerge seemed fairly minimal. Compared to Nikita #4 they put on less growth overall.
This is not true. Dar Sofiyivky is roughly 50% kaki and 50% virginiana. I had it run through the flow cytometry. Had it been 93.75% kaki it wouldn’t survive zone 6,
Harbin.
You are correct. I heard it from Dax once time but did more research and it is 50/50 DV X Kaki.
Tony
How can flow cytometry tell you the percentage of kaki vs virginiana? It’s typically used for ploidy determination. Both should be hexaploid. Is there a significant difference in genome size?
@Harbin can you tell us whether Dar Sofiyivky’s mother (Kolhospnytsia) was fully kaki, or was it just mostly kaki. I had seen somewhere that Kolhospnytsia was from a cross between Nakita’s Gift and a full kaki pollen parent, but it is hard to tell which one is right. Thanks.
Kolhospnytsa is mostly kaki. Very tasty, nice and clean fruit .
The only drawback is the late ripening.
The breeder must have used embryo rescue to get Dar Sofiyviky because one of the parent is a pure DV male.
Tony
@tonyOmahaz5 I believe the seeds weren’t fully developed and they had to use invitro techniques to get germination, but not the embryo rescue technique. Pavel may certainly have better information, but here was a previous discussion:
It does make me wonder what it would take to get the partially formed seeds I find in some hybrids to germinate.
I haven’t seen any partially formed seeds either. I did pollinate Dar Sofiyivky with Taishu few years ago. It was unintentional…they just flowered at the same time: DS outside and Taishu in my greenhouse. All the pollinated flowers formed fruits with fully developed seeds. Germination was excellent resulting in 20 or so healthy seedlings. Interestingly, they show characteristics of both parents, some alike mother and some more fatherlike. Hope I can live up to see the fruits one day.
