Nikita #4 Persimmon

Do you have an update on Nikita #4? Does anyone else know if it’s an improvement over Nikita’s Gift?

Hopefully Tony still has it going and can give us his thoughts.

I may be able to give a review this fall if the half dozen fruitlets on a graft from last year continue to hold on. Ideally I’d like to taste it at the same time as Zima Khurma and the original NG. It is hard to imagine an improvement to NG, unless it is more cold hardy or possibly better at actually holding fruit.

My Nikita#4 died to the ground level at -17F cold snap this February. I buried all my hybrid persimmons union about 8 inches below ground for guaranteed of resprout if the polar vortex and late cold snaps showed up. The Derevanko, Nikita #4, and NB-02 all died at -17F and resprout above the union underground. They are about 6 inches tall now. The Sosnoskya survived the +17F and now is loaded with flowers. Hopefully some of the fruits will hold on for taste test this fall. The Nikita #4 x Rossy male seed from Dax is growing nicely and survived the -17F. It is going on third leaf. Kuninaja X Rossy male seed from Cliff England also survived the -17F. The three hybrid persimmons from David Pierce also survived the -17F. The rest of my own cross of H-118, H-12O, Meader, Prok X 400-5 of Jerry Lehman hardy male survived the -17F also. Photo of the Nikita #4 resprout the above the graft union underground.

Myself, I’m hoping for holding onto fruit better.

Thanks for the update, Tony. I wish you a good growing year.

My in ground Nikita #4 did not survive -12°F this winter and died to the graft. I should have planted it deeply like Tony. Going to put Kujinaja in its place and will do that this time.
