No acid citrus

I was listening to my weekly garden shows and a mention of the Vanilla Blood Orange and how it has no acid. Anybody grow this? Just curious about it? Also was mentioned a madarin considered the best tasting citrus of all. I don’t remember the name? Not like I can grow any of these anyway!

There are some oranges that are sweet without any acid, such as imperial or sucreña variety … I do not recommend these varieties are good to eat, but after you get tired of the taste quickly

I can not guess that mandarins in that report refers to some of the best are nero, gold nugget, cremenules, murcott

The lastest thing that I know of to be touted as ‘the best tasting citrus’ has been Sugar Belle, a cross between a clementine and a minneola. I don’t know yet if it really is that good, or just the latest new New Thing.

I grow this cultivar. It is actually called Vaniglia Sanguigno. It is not a true blood orange, but more along the lines of Cara Cara, with the the albedo being pink-tinged from lycopene, and not anthocyanins, as other true blood oranges contain. It is definitely sub-acid. It can have a vague, bitter aftertaste, so it’s really an acquired taste. I happen to like it and so does my husband. I would say most Americans would not like it. Where it grows natively, in parts of Italy, it is very well liked & prized, and is liked by those in the Middle East who put a high priority on sub-acid citrus. It’s an interesting citrus.

And, I would guess the mandarin mentioned would probably be either Ponkan or Seedless Kishu has winning the top citrus taste test. Clemenules for me is up there for “top three” mandarins, as well. And, Page mandarin hybrid, which for me, makes the absolute best tasting citrus juice of any citrus out there.

Kishu is really good but small. It is very sweet and juicy. I tried a Miyagawa last year and it was real good also. I think I liked the Miyagawa better. it has a more complex flavor.

Thanks Patty for the great answer! I heard adding some acid helps. like some squeezed lime.
I heard about a lemon grown in France that is very thick peeled and has a wonderful taste. Similar lemons grow in Morocco and other parts of the world too. I would like to try these at some point.
I often have to add lemon or lime to various things I cook, and finding ones with different taste profiles can be helpful depending on what I’m making. My only problem with citrus is I can’t eat much of it. I never use it in adult beverages either. Tastes fantastic, but I get a sour stomach easy from citrus. With alcohol it’s worse. Why the low acid oranges are interesting to me.
Recently the Detroit vodka Valentine, placed 1st in the 2016 Vodka World competition in London. Looking for something to mix it with, or infuse with! No smell at all to this vodka, it is amazing. Can you think of any other vodka made in the USA?

Coincidentally…

That’s good stuff too! I forgot about it, thanks for pointing it out!

There are two or three other vodkas in the Austin area as well. Dripping Springs is another good one.

Awesome I have two friends in TX with MI roots, I just saw both Saturday, if I can’t get it local, I can have them bring me some!

Yup, members beat me to it - Tito’s and Dripping Springs. Also, Ballast Point’s Fugu Vodkas.

I have tried Tito’s numerous times. It is very good, although Valentine is too, and considering it won in London, it may be fairly cheap right now, and a steal for the price… I’m going to line a shot up of both and compare. I report back when back in town.
I’ll have to try the others. Valentine was the first time I could tell what vodka it is. I don’t drink that much, so far from an expert. I know what I like though! This weekend I’ll try at the yacht club, to see if they have any of the others. The place is cool, if I want something they don’t have the manager will stock it. If he can find it, even if retail, he’ll buy it. Thanks all for the info and suggestions. OK, I better write these down, I’ll never remember! Well besides Tito’s!
I know this is off topic, but really I was looking for something to mix besides tonic. That is my go to drink. Doctor’s orders actually. (I need the quinine in tonic to help control spasms of my damaged nerves (I was in a head on crash in 95)).

OK that is one cool name!
