Hi any members growing Pecans north east of Flagstaff? Thought a couple of Western and Wichita would make some nice shade trees.
Thanks
My best friend lives in Golden Valley, and with the big rocks under the sandy soil it is hard to even plant any tree at all. Is it much easier where you live to dig?
Crazy soil patterns here in the White Mountain area. Some areas on my property have layers of sandstone, others have layers of silt and some are deep clay or adobe. I even have a section that has river cobbles.
Focus first on the rootstock as it will determine success or failure. I suggest Riverside and/or Elliott as both are highly rated for low rainfall areas.
Varieties adapted include Western. Wichita tends to overbear and fall into an alternate year on year off pattern of nut production. Sullivan should be considered.
Thank you. Will see what I can find. Nurseries in my area don’t have much selection.
