I am seeing an odd problem with my row of potato plants this year. They are all Satin the variety (an improved Yukon Gold) and about 12-15" high, just starting to flower (we are later than many folks here as to when spring finally hits).
A few weeks ago I started noticing an odd twisting/curling to the new leaves. It is paired with a loss of green in the margins of those leaves, with only the main veins of the leaf remaining green. This seems to effect new leaves only, and the rest of the plant looks like it is doing fine. These leaves seem to curl up and twist along their main axis. Maybe 1/3 of the plants are showing these symptoms.
I am trying to figure out what might be causing this. At first I thought it looked like herbicide damage, but that seems very very unlikely (I don’t use/have them, and there is no ag around here for any drift to come from). I went thru quite a few pics of disease and deficiencies and no exact matches. The closest things seem to potentially be a B or Fe or Mn deficiency, but none of those seem to be an exact match.
One thing which is different this year is that we have had many weeks of very wet weather, way more water than normal. Another is I started using an ammonia based liquid copper fungicide and a new non-ionic spreader sticker; both to combat the wet weather/rain.
Anyone have any ideas what this might be? (I’ll post a pic once the rain stops and I can get one)
.
Are you still having the issue? I did not see this post at the time. Potatoes like tomatoes are members of the nightshade family so they can share certain pests and diseases. Here are some possible causes http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/vegetable/files/2010/10/E-626-What-Makes-Tomato-Leaves-Twist-or-Curl.pdf
Thanks for the link. I did not see any pics there which matched my plants. It is an odd twist in that the leaf is rotated along it main vein/axis, as well as the sides of the leaves going up too (not sure that really covers it, but have a look at the attached pic).
Still seeing the curled/twisted leaves, however it appears to have gotten better than when I first posted. It still appears on maybe 10% of the plants. Not entirely obvious if the infected plants are suffering in that they still appear to be growing and are flowering. The symptoms seemed to get better when our weather turned wetter recently, but more water did not really make the problem go away entirely.
Assuming you can see this pic, look at that center leaf, see how it is spiraling along its main vein. Not as much curl on the sides of the leaf as I saw in the past. And not obvious in this pic, but the leaves with this symptom also have their veins much enlarged and they are white in color (as opposed to the normal small fully green veins).
The problem could have been caused by dry weather I suppose. Ours tomatoes will curl there leaves when it’s dry.
