Ohio Treasure blackraspberry

I see this offered by edible landscaping as the first double cropping blackraspberry . Is this the one that needs a pollinator ? I hope so as it would be useful for breeding to me . As I recall the Niwot breeder had patented one that was self incompatable first .

Pete the breeder of Niwot sent me a 2nd double cropping variety that is better than Niwot. I have not grown out the seeds yet. Waiting till I have the technique down. he sent me 5 or six different cultivars. Mostly wild types for breeding. I’m not really interested in breeding blacks, but treasure the seeds all the same. I don’t think Ohio Treasure needs a pollenizer? Not sure though? I would think Pete’s first cultivar would be around then. He was bummed because it was thornless, and Niwot is not. Pete has given up on breeding now due to health reasons.
I have a so far incredible hybrid of a red. It grew 4 feet tall from seed the first year. All my others are a foot or so at best. Pete told me not to plant out the first winter, but this hybrid is plenty big enough to plant out. It is a cross between Polka and Anne. It didn’t fruit the first year, none ever do. But it certainly will next spring.
A kind user here sent me Josephine red which produces the largest berries I have seen, and they are good too! I want to cross that with Anne, and Fall Gold this summer.
I want to make a large berry that is in-between in color of a red and a yellow. Such as Double Gold or Valentina sold in the UK, (from the same breeding program that produced the Autumn series.)
Curious and impatient to see the fruits of my hybrid. Even if red, looks to be a winner as far as growth goes. Anne was the mother, traits of the pollen parent are obvious on it, such as the wimpy thorns. Anne has very few to no thorns.

I did not see any pollination info for Ohio Treasure . I was hoping it needed a pollinator . That would make crossing easier . I have Valentine artic raspberry . They need a pollinator . I bought 4 plants 2 of each variety . 1 Valentine survived . Looking at hardiness from that one . So if it blooms this year I could get a cross . It is in a fabric pot . So I can move it to what is blooming at the same time . It did not put on much growth so it may not bloom this year .

That is not the same, a different species. I thought about trying them too. I would like to here how it goes. Why common names suck in many ways. Such as Black Beauty, a mulberry, a fig, and an elderberry.
This Valentina, a summer bearer.

This one is Rubus idaeus

The arctic Valentina raspberry is
Rubus arcticus L. subsp. x stellarcticus

I hope it works . It is a Rubus species . Many Rubus species have been crossed already . I hope to get some seeds to grow this year . I have some scarified and chilling . I brought a few out of the refrigerator about a week ago . Nothing yet . I hope to see which worked best bleach or acid . I also have some in a pot outside that went through a digestive system . Those should work . I have 3 volunteer black raspberries that should bear this year plus a blackberry . Probably nothing special . I did get a nice purple from seed so you never know till you try .

In my tests battery acid worked best for me soaking 15 minutes. Tyler a friend not here on garden web, and f4f or maybe it was Brady? Had good results with bleach at 1/2 hour.
I tried acid at 5, 10 and 15 minutes. Only the 15 minute one germinated seeds. I didn’t do any this year. Real life pulled me away, I didn’t have the time. And still do not. Next time with acid, I will try 15, 17.5 and 20 minutes. Fifteen may still be too short? Close though!
I also have a number of volunteers thanks to the birds. I tasted two black raspberry volunteers, and they were nothing special and were pulled. I still have a couple. I have a yellow, and would like to see the black it came from. Just because the berry size is big. I need to grow some of those out! I say yellow, fully ripe it’s brown. These are grown in a 30 gallon root pouch, and left out all winter,

The plant is so big I can’t even photograph the pot! It’s only 2nd leaf! Looks like great breeding stock to me! The berries are bigger than Jewel, Allen, or Niwot.

Very drought tolerant too. My blacks were small due to drought here last summer. Not on this one though. These were picked early, they may get a little bigger. I always include some under ripe berries in my jams.

I heard blackberries have an even tougher coat. I want to tackle them this coming season too!
I’ll be playing cupid and start a romance between miss Columbia Star, she’s a thornless beauty and Darrow, A handsome hardy easterner! I may have to perform 2 or more crosses, if they are even at the same ploidy level? May not work at all…

Valentina raspberry, second phase of ripening just starting. My kids like these along with Falgold the most but this doesn’t mean much since I grow only Willamette, Heritage, Falgold, Autumn Bliss and Glen Coe. Very sweet, no acid.

Nice I wanted one of those, but ended up breeding my own. I call it Irene, not ready yet. It is a pink though. Next year I will try to breed more colors. Busy with other projects this year.

i got 8 ohio treasure and 8 valentine/ sophia arctics i planted this spring. after almost killing them with too hot soil they came back and 3 have green berries on them right now! going to taste these berries this year! only about 2ft. now. the arctics are also hanging in there but not doing much. also planted 4 baby cakes dwarf thornless blackberries in the same hot soil. although they didn’t burn they haven’t grown much since this spring. look healthy tho. should take off next season.planted some michigan thimbleberries and they’re doing the best of all the plants i got from Hartmanns.

So can anyone report on the flavor of Ohio Treasure ? Just not impressed with Niwot’s flavor .

they’re ok. i still prefer the flavor of reds over blacks fresh but i haven’t tried them in jams yet. the berries are small compared to reds but you do get 2 crops on these on primo and florocanes. can’t compare to other blacks as these are the only ones I’ve tried.
