I’m sorry if these have been answered somewhere before but I couldn’t find them. I’ve recently been planting some of my quince, medlar, and asian pear on OHxF 97 rootstocks. I have a couple of questions.
1 - Does anyone know the approximate mature size of quince and medlar on this rootstock? I’m not burying the graft since it’s too high.
2 - What about collar rot on this rootstock? I’ve been planting them a couple of inches deeper than the root flare and am now questioning this. Is it ok? I’ve got pretty well drained soil.
Sorry I can’t answer your questions from much point of experience except to say that I’ve
grafted a few medlar on that rootstock and am curious myself…also curious to know how quince will do on it. As you probably know too, OHXF 97 is a full vigor stock, but with quince and medlar being inherently lower vigor than pear I imagine you’d end up with smaller trees. Of course plenty also depends on your climate, soil fertility and management style…
I don’t think you have much risk of collar rot, particularly if your soil is well drained, you could always replace the soil with peastone around the trunk root crown zone if you have concern.
