One big Fig

Hi all very hot here! 95F tomorrow.
Here is a picture of my 1 Breba Fig “Longue d’Aout”. I usually get just one Breba, but the rest of the slow growing tree has quite a few this year on it’s new growth . Its very exciting! The Breba is a 4 inch monster.

It’s big, but more importantly, how did it taste? I got some massive figs in Auckland (New Zealand) back in January, but they were pretty bland. The guy selling them said they are called “French Sweet”. A bit of a misnomer for this batch at least.

Somehow I missed that you gave the name in the first post. I also grow LDA and just posted about it a few days ago. I had 3 LDA, at 3 different sites, survive the winter with only some dieback. All 3 are alive to at least 4’, while all my other figs died to near the ground.

I used to think I was growing Bryant Dark, until someone mentioned that the fruit didn’t match. It was suggested to me that it could be LDA and when I went back through the list that was sent to me at the time Longue d’Aout was there. So, it must have been mislabeled at some step in the process.

June 12th is very early. I think the earliest I’ve ripened it is mid-July, like in the below pic. And even when I do get some breba, there aren’t many. It is pretty early with the main crop though.

I don’t think I’d say it is the best tasting fig ever, but it is quite good.

That breba is enormous. Longue d’Aout is such a reliable producer once it gets going. Good sign that the main crop is setting on new growth too, sounds like a good year for it.

My one Breba each year is huge the rest, the main crop are a good size, but most ripen end of August beginning of September. it is the best fig I have ever tasted. Figs grow here in the cracks of sidewalks!
