Bob’s post on the lychee thread got me thinking: If you could only plant one fruit tree, pollination not an issue, what would you plant? I’d probably do Nikitia’s Gift persimmon.
Touch choice. Lychee is my favorite fruit. if I live in tropical region I would have a Lychee tree. However, I am in zone 5. I would choose a fruit tree that can survive / produce the best in the area.
Honey Royale nectarine.
Sorry SMC, one won’t work for me. I had so many favorites: Sugarcane jujube, Mango paw paw, Starbros Donut peach, Foster peach (thanks Scott, got one fruit last year and it was very sweet), Red Baron peach, Nikita’s Gift Hybrid persimmon, Hachiya Asian persimmon, Prok American persimmon, Fragrance Asian pear, Lychee, Jack fruit, and Milk fruit, and Giant Seedless Holidays grape.
Tony
For my location: Mid Pride Peach on Citation rootstock.
Meyer lemon.
LYCHEE!!!
Money Tree like the one at the White House.
So many people want what they can’t have. Or in this case can’t grow. I get tired of that talk. It’s pretty pointless.
I had a guy come around once and all he seemed to want to talk about was the fabulous Mango he tasted once in the tropics. Well so what? He couldn’t and still hasn’t grown what is best adapted here. How’s he gonna grow Mango?
After I try A few hundred others, I’ll let you know.
How many posts so far in this thread would you say are pointless?
Yours wasn’t, thank you. And I wasn’t being critical of anyone although it might sound that way. Just my sentiments for what little it’s worth.
So if you could only grow one at your current location, what would it be?
As stated earlier Honey Royale nectarine. It has the best flavor of anything I grow although a few other things are close.
Fruitnut, I think I know where you are coming from. I get questions on how to grow cherries, almonds, and raspberries from my friends that do not have any fruit trees. They are nearly impossible to grow in humid southeast Texas. I tell them it is best to start with a satsuma, persimmon, or blueberry and see it they can get them to grow.
I really want to grow pluots but I don’t think I will be successful. I am trying one but want to grow the peaches and plums that I know will grow here under the right conditions.
Snow Queen Nectarine has been the best fruit I have grown. Hopefully some other fruit that was recommended here will fruit out next year.
Yes, if I was allowed more trees it would be #2.
So far it would have to be Karmijn de Sonnaville apple. But I would need two others for pollination ;). Dream fruit would be a tie between a pomegranate, dragon fruit, donut peach and pineapple.
Ananasnaya hardy (arguta) kiwi for the years late freezes late freezes don’t hit too hard. For more regularity I wouldn’t value anything more than a fig, although with only one I’d definitely have to protect it against the exceptionally cold winters like these last two. A satsuma would be tempting, too.
SMC, I’d love to hear more about your experience with Nikita’s gift. How all do you enjoy it, and can you describe what you like about it?
I’m a bit split between a hardy kiwi and a huge multi-graft apple. Both can get pretty big and produce a lot of fruit. I probably like the kiwi’s fruit a bit more (Issai was the best last year and had a brix consistently in the 20’s) and it does give a lot of “opportunities” to putter around pruning (which would be a good thing if it was all I had). The apple would have the edge based on the nearly year-round fruit it could supply (ripe from Aug-Nov + storage through winter).
Now, if we release the constraints of reality (sorry Fruitnut), I’d like to have a year-round producing sweet cherry.
What male do you match with Issai? Do you have more than one Isssai?
