Ordering 2027 / Confess: What Have You Ordered For Spring 27 (so far)?

I’ve ordered a Flower of Kent apple tree (also known as the apple that bonked Isaac Newton on the head) since no one seems to grow it and it’s on my tasting list.

Just wanted to say I love your goal for apple tasting. Have you gotten far?

Can you name these varieties, please?

Are these 4 in 1 trees cleft grafted with 4 scions at the same height?

Fourteen to go! (And I’m off to Vermont this weekend to hopefully find two more.)

Amused with our Ornamental Cameo Quince. It rapidly sheds and regrows leaves. And despite that it has also regrown over the bigger pot we gave it. Still going to try standard quince; but in the form of BA-29C just to see how it survives here.

Tempted to try to root a few scions of true quince varieties though.

Only thing so far is a couple crowns of German Wine rhubarb.
My plans are to buy some EMLA-111 rootstock.

This far I have only ordered Mirabelle von Flotow and Graf Althan’s Greengage for delivery in July 2027 (the German nursery will pot the bareroot trees in March and then send the potted trees in July; in general ordering of bareroot plants from south is not optimal, since they are usually only able to ship them when the ground is frozen here) but I have prepared a list of stuff to purchase when the spring collections become available:

  1. Ribes odoratum ‘Krupnoplodna’ (Carya)
  2. Ribes odoratum ‘Yellow-fruited’ (Deaflora)
  3. Ribes odoratum ‘Leisan’/‘Laysan’ (Carya)
  4. Ribes odoratum ‘Sibirskoye Solntse’ (Carya)

  7. Gaultheria procumbens ‘Very Berry’ (tuinplants.nl) ×3
  8. Prunus tomentosa ‘Efimka’

  9. Prunus tomentosa ‘White Ninja’ (cornusmas)
  10. Prunus tomentosa ‘Cyganka’
  11. Diospyros virginiana ‘Szukiss’ (Vitaflora)

Flower of Kent, Golden Harvey, King of the Pippins, Lady Williams, Medaille D’Or, Red Astrachan, Stayman, Twenty Ounce Pippin (not the same as Twenty Ounce), Virginia Gold, Virginia Winesap, Wealthy, White Winter Pearmain, and Winter Sweet Paradise.

Red Astrachan is especially annoying because several orchards in my region grow it, but it ripens well before they open for the season so it’s never available. (And I’ve had no luck asking to come before the season to pick a few.)

With any luck I’ll cross another couple off the list this weekend, on an apple hunt in Vermont and New Hampshire. And in another few years I’ll have Flower of Kent in the backyard

Despite having about a month and a half left of my growing season, I have pretty much finished my pre-spring buying. Mostly because this spring, I will be focusing on what I have and really establishing some trees. The only thing I have left to do is buy veggie seeds from Baker Creek around Thanksgiving, and cuttings from Marta in December.

The USF plant sale just finished. I got a Mayhaw (will go in the ground before winter), an Eastern Red Cedar (ironic to buy these at the same time and from the same vendor), and a native cactus to replace the one that died last year. I also got the last of my tropical fruit seeds, barring the need for replacements In the future. I am most excited for Annona stenophylla, a species that I couldn’t get to sprout before. The only thing I am waiting on confirmation to buy is Chinese Passion Melon (Cionosicyos macranthus) and Cassabanana (Sicana odoifera) seeds. I don’t usually talk about seeds before they germinate because I’m superstitious, but I got:
Jarilla caudata
Monodora myristica (Calabash or Jamaican Nutmeg)
Ribes viburnifolium (Catalina Currant)
Capsicum frutescens (Wiri Wiri Pepper)
Cionosicyos excisus (Yucatan Passion Melon)
Eugenia sp. Frankenstein
Nauclea latifolia (African Peach)
Diospyros texana (Texan Persimmon)
Dovyalis caffra (Kei Apple)
Annona stenophylla

I am also rooting some cuttings of Floriguard to eventually practice peach grafting, with the end goal of growing one out a Floriguard enough to turn it into a base for a Prunus multi-graft. Probably 3 4-in-1s. I also have a large Loquat that I will be multigrafting in Spring. Grafting is going to be my goal for next spring, I need to get better at it so that I can actually get the varieties I want. So I will be practicing with free material and plants that aren’t normally grafted, so not a lot of plants to be purchased this year.

I want to continue practicing my grafting this coming year as well. I have several loquat seedlings growing that I plan to graft a named cultivar or two onto. My plan is to just graft some scions from my biggest seedling onto some potted seedlings as practice. Once I’m more confident in my take rate I’ll start trying to source scions of other cultivars. I have one grafted tree in ground (Yehuda) that I may try to duplicate once it’s big enough to take scions from.

You’ll have to let us know how your weekend apple hunt goes. I plan to pick up some apples from this orchard: Pick-Your-Own Fruit at Chiles Peach Orchard in Crozet, Virginia next week.

Then, will have to put them somewhere to ripen I suppose. I’ve never had staymen either- so I’ll get some of that one! Now I’ll also be asking if the winesaps are Virginia winesap or regular winesap!

Nothing confirmed yet but I have a quince on the list. Always wanted one and keep talking myself out of it, but the Mirabelle de Metz mention above is making me feel like I should just commit to things.

My acquisitions have slowed a lot because I’m running out of room.

Yes, I’m there after I plant what I’ve got coming next year.

Time for more land, I reckon.
