How to Choose the Best Oxygen Absorbers for Food Storage

The best way to protect your food from spoilage is by using oxygen absorbers for food storage. The oxygen absorber packets, as the name, suggests absorbing the oxygen from the surrounding environment and works as a barrier against aerobic bacteria and fungi that cause food degradation and spoilage. By getting rid of most of the free oxygen in a storage container, you can prolong the shelf life of almost any type of food – dry or wet – making them suitable for long-term storage.

The importance of oxygen removal cannot be overstated when it comes to preserving high-quality foods such as dried fruits, berries, grains, and jerky treats for dog chews. While oxidation is responsible for certain reactions that cause the browning of vegetables such as potatoes and apples, it can cause foods like nuts, whole grains, beans and pet treats to lose nutrition, taste, and color. Food storage oxygen absorbers are designed to deplete the available oxygen inside a container by absorbing it using an all-natural chemical compound that does not contaminate food in any way. The lifespan of these packets differs depending on the size of the product they are used for; generally speaking, you should expect them to last anywhere between 1-3 years.

Purchasing these items can be confusing because there are so many choices available on the market today; however; using this buying guide will help you to determine which oxygen absorber product will best suit your needs.

1. Size

Determining the size of package you need depends on what type of products you will be storing. Oxygen absorbers are available in a variety of sizes from individual packets to units that can contain up to 2500cc which is over one pound of oxygen absorbers. Oxygen absorbers also come in packages for both moisture and non-moisture foods, with the moisture packets containing an additional moisture indicator you can use to check if your product needs re-deoxidization. This way you do not have to guess when its time to buy more oxygen absorber packets.

2. Packet

You need to include in your calculations how much oxygen is being absorbed by the packet in a given time period. If your container requires a 5% depletion in order for it to be properly sealed, you need to purchase oxygen absorbers that will provide 5% of the total capacity of the container. For example, if you have a storage canister 10 inches in diameter by 8 inches tall with a volume of 2 cubic feet which contains 800 cubic inches then you need to purchase an oxygen absorber that absorbs at least 40cc or .04Lbs within the range of time that it takes for your food product to deplete.

3. Moisture

The moisture indicator included with most moisture packets tells you when its time for re-deoxidization. If your packaging requires airtight sealing and is moist (pastry powders, jerky, nuts etc.), you cannot use any moisture absorbers without first removing the moisture. You must do this by dehydrating your product before packaging and then placing a regular oxygen absorber packet inside of it.

4. Food Type

Oxygen absorption packets contain a blend of iron powder with a small percentage of salt, activated carbon and an indicator to let you know when the job is done. There are different types available for moist or dry food storage as well as those made specifically for use with nitrogen flushing. There are also some that have multiple indicators so you can check on status without opening up your food storage cannister.

5. Shelf Life

Each manufacturer will post a “best if used by” date on their oxygen absorbers packages; however they often have years of extended shelf life if stored in an airtight container. The lower the humidity, the longer they can be stored. Once you open them up or expose them to humidity, that is when their shelf life will start diminishing fast.

6. Indicators

There are many different styles of oxygen absorbers on the market today; however there are two types of indicators that will come with your purchase:

  • Moisture Indicator – Has a mixture of red food coloring and salt inside of it. As soon as your absorber starts drawing in oxygen it will become lighter because the carbon dioxide gas has changed its chemical composition by combining with the iron to form Fe 2 CO 3 . When this happens, visible pink streaks appear which tell you that it’s time for re-oxidation.
  • Indicator Ink – Most absorbers contain an ink that will change color from blue to pink to let you know when the oxygen has been depleted and it’s time for re-deoxidization. Some absorbers have a window with a different color on each side which lets you monitor the redox process without having to open your storage canister.

7. Grams of Oxygen Absorbed Per Gram of Packet

We all want our money to go as far as possible; however, if we are looking at grams per gram its important not to sacrifice quality for quantity. For example, cheap dry food packets might only use 1/2cc as opposed to their top competitor who uses 4cc in their dry food packets. A 4cc oxygen absorber is cheaper per gram but you would need almost twice the number of them to achieve the same results; therefore, if your container requires 52cc worth of product then at 1/2cc it takes 104 packets to get the job done which costs more in the long run.

8. Price

How much are you willing to spend? Oxygen absorbers cost just pennies per use regardless of what they are being used for. Where you will see a huge difference between brands is with moisture or multi-indicator packets that have multiple uses and can be repackaged again after their initial use.

9. Quality Assurance

Where was your product manufactured? What materials were used in its production? What type of container is it packaged in and what are the top selling brands? There are some distributors who purchase their absorbers from China because they are cheaper yet their packets contain water, salt, cast iron powder or other ingredients that can affect your food storage.

Moisture Absorbers vs Oxygen Absorbers for Dehydrated Foods

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does food last with oxygen absorbers?

Packaged oxygen absorbers will last from 6 months to about 1 year before opening and use. Once the package is open, use it within 15 minutes or less than 3 days! Store unused packets in an airtight glass jar for up to 6 more weeks after that; they’re good for at least another three months of storage if kept cool (less likely closer proximity).

2. What foods Cannot be stored with oxygen absorbers?

It’s important to know the difference between an oxygen absorber and a delay pack. An absorption supplement will help keep your food fresher, which in turn guarantees its safety for longer periods of time – they’re especially useful if you plan on storing dry foods like herbs or spices; these items should always come with an additional protection step against spoilage caused by metal utensils touching them while cooking (which can lead oxidation) as well as other factors such colors entering into contact with certain plastics due to their instability over longterm storage periods.

3. Can oxygen absorbers cause botulism?

As the name suggests, botulism is an illness caused by bacteria. It can be found in both canned and dry goods like spices because they contain too much moisture that doesn’t go away when sealed up for long periods of time.”

A type of food spoilage called “moisture penetration” leads to this dangerous condition! The high levels cause toxic reactions with air molecules inside your home’s storage area which makes you susceptible not only to botulism poisoning but also many other illnesses due to its potency increasing exponentially over time (more on that later).

4. Can you put oxygen absorbers in flour?

If you want to store flour for months, years, or even decades the best solution is by using sealed Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. This will keep your food safe from moisture and insects that can’t survive in a closed environment without air as well!

5. Do you need oxygen absorbers if you vacuum seal?

You can keep your food safe from mold and bacteria growth by adding oxygen absorbers. When you use them, the sealed vacuum bags will be free of any microbes that might cause illness in foods like meats or vegetables for up to 10 times longer than they would normally last on store shelves!

6. Do oxygen absorbers remove moisture?

Oxygen Absorbers only absorb oxygen and not moisture or air, but Silica Gel does a great job at it. Therefore, to maintain the humidity levels in your packaging you should use an OxygenAbsorbent like silicate which will keep all that wetness out!

Conclusion

If you need the best oxygen absorbers for food storage, there’s one that stands out in effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Oxygen absorbers are an inexpensive way to prevent your food from going bad, but they’re not all created equal. Although many people use this product during long-term food storage because it can extend the shelf life of dry goods like grains, nuts, and legumes up to five times longer than their original packaging date – which is why so many preppers swear.

We all have a love-hate relationship with food. It’s one of the most basic necessities in life, yet so many people struggle to afford it or maintain healthy eating habits due to their busy schedules and lack of time. The last thing you want is for your hard-earned grocery budget to go up in smoke because spoiled produce goes moldy before anyone can eat it! That’s why oxygen absorbers are such an important tool in preserving our food supply. They work by trapping any excess air inside a package-including vacuum-sealed bags and mason jars-so that bacteria cannot grow as quickly on the surface of what we buy from the store.

The reviews above have given you the answer: “What makes a great oxygen absorber for food storage pack”, how to properly care for these little tools and where you can buy quality tools today from now on!

Interesting post Clark. My question: it appears this is good for dried foods. I assume these will be vacuum packed or put into freezer ziplocs with the air squeezed out as much as feasible. What is the oxygen permeability of vacuum packs (or ziplocs)?

My friends double and triple bag their items. Then seal them in a container that is air tight. One of my friends used tea light candles which is a trick I learned in early childhood. The idea is seal your food in multile bags. Then store in a racoon proof steal can that is bagged multiple times. They then light a candle inside the large can burning up alloxygen inside the air tight can. A metal trashcan works if it’s sealed with wax or other items and doesn’t leak oxygen. A preppers favorite is 5 gallon pails. When i was a kid the old timers here setup drops in the woods in case another country attacked. They might have 20 such drops to keep them alive where they stored mre mostly. Military food was something they were used to they were former military so they were military trained or former Amish families etc. The former Amish family stored grains not mre . Keep the grains whole so they last longer. Corn or Wheat or barley can be kept 20 years if need be. The native Americans stored corn on the cob many years. Have some I harvested for seed from when I was 26 but have my doubts it’s viable to grow. Stored it just in case at the time it likely needs soaked and given to my fish.
