Pacific Northwest Fruit & Nut Growers

There’s been some wind at jblm and it’s broken some twigs of the major trees. Nothing else so far and nothing in Olympia

No Internet since yesterday evening. No eta for fixing. Power flickered many times but didn’t go.
Lots of carnage in the neighborhood, downed trees etc.

Yeah, nothing in Olympia

We are in Corvallis , not much happened here. It looks like northern Washington and NoCal though got creamed.

Most commercial establishments near me lost power. Grocery stores were out of refrigerated and frozen food. Only fresh and canned foods available.
Still no internet at home. About a half million homes without power and living off generators. Hotels are all booked up.

We have been getting at least a summer fruit box from them for years now. One of friends hosts a pickup site which is how we found out about them. The first year we got a summer box they had all sorts of stone fruit hybrids that they don’t always have now. I have no interest in store bought peaches or nectarines any more after getting their box.

So we might actually be getting the house in Yelm that i wanted!

If we do…

Any chance anyone might be in the tree removal business here before i reach out to other people more local?

The property is in North Yelm and i want to try to clear the land a little for growing everything.

Looked into renting the items: cherry picker, stump grinder, and wood chipper but i have no truck and don’t know how i would be able to get any of this to me.

Figured I’d reach out to everywhere i haunt before outsourcing.

Okay so last time I lived here, it felt cold in December and some of my photos even show it snowing…

I’ve been gone for about 4 years but I’m here for good now.

Is it just me or is it incredibly warm this year? I swear I don’t ever remember it being so warm to where i can still wear tanktops to garden at night.

I love it this year!
Still have feijoa - large ones on the tree. These are late varieties but 18 brix!
If this continues, I’m ripping out all my NZ varieties as they are so poor quality by comparison.

If you’re going to throw them out, consider me as a possible adoption point in the future

Weather temperature wise, me too!

I was making strawberry beds in a tank top last night, getting eaten by mosquitoes and thinking to myself: man, I should ask if this is normal.

Yeah, I was out today without a jacket on. I still have Goldrush apples on the tree although the leaves are turned. Those are the last fruits hanging on. All of the persimmons have been in for a while.

I thought it was salmonberries at first. Do they get SWD?

I don’t think so but I’m not sure. We had some weird beetles for about a week but they’re mostly gone now. My pollinators are wasps and they seem to two clean the plant a bit which is nice.

I haven’t found any worms in them and it looks like the messed up druplets disappeared with the disappearance of the beetles. No fruit flies hanging around thankfully.

I’ve been leaving them for the hummingbirds but it looks like they haven’t really touched it.

This is my first year here with them.

So what are the tastiest early feijoa varieties for our climate if we should avoid the recent series out of NZ?

Nikita is sweeter than every NZ variety I tasted. Nikita is supposed to be very early but didn’t start to ripen for me until mid November.
Apollo is a mid late season variety, also from NZ and is better than all the early large NZ varieties. December ripening.

The best are the Mark Albert varieties- Abbadabba and 8 ball are consistently over 16 brix. The last Abbadabba was pushing 18 brix.

I’ll be grafting over some of my ultra early NZ trees and will have scionwood for trade - that is if your season won’t allow later varieties.

Up here near Vancouver, BC, we still have not had a killing frost; but I’ve recently removed or pruned all of my peppers, tomatoes, and red raspberries because the fruit was rotting from all of the rain, not due to the cold. My last picked tomatoes are still ripening nicely indoors; no green tomatoes this year.

My hardy Fuchsias are still blooming; and, lately, it has been even warmer than early December.

Yes, it’s been a super mild fall/winter in southern BC, only a couple of light frosts so far. Mosquitoes have been hatching at night, flower bulbs are thinking it’s spring.
