Nobody wants to be more wrong than I do!
All great innovations start with a dream and a certain measure of intransigence.
Before I learned how not to kill the things I plant, I massacred several avocado trees in Santa Rosa, California. Imagine what the carnage would have been like up here? I even killed a meyer lemon down there. At the time I lived in a valley that got very cold on winter mornings. At the time I knew nothing about protecting young plants. I thought that if a plant label said hardy to 26 F I could put it in the ground and ignore it. Ha! No such luck.
you will need fuzzy male they cant cross pollinate with hardy kiwi
Great idea to have a thread for local growers.

Iām doing a 2-prong approach, planting out large numbers of small seedlings to see if any of them can survive at that small size, but also keeping some trees in pots in the greenhouse until they get larger in case none of the wee ones make it.
Itās promising that some of these small first-year trees with still-green stems appear to have survived our coldest nights this winter (18Ā°F followed by 15Ā°F), but Iāll have to wait for spring and summer to see how well they actually bounce back from it. Many of them died back to their roots, but a few seem to have their larger stems alive still. The only leaves that made it were in the bottom few inches, so under the snow cover.
jsteph00921:
I have Lisbon lemon and Hamlin orange outside in a 100g tub. In milder past years, when wrapped with bubble wrap, strung with Christmas lights, and on a thermostat to come on at 37F, there had been no leaf drop. The 5ā Lisbon would bear about 6 lemons/year. This year, the set-up was not able to compensate for a low of 7F! Lisbon looks like it will totally defoliate, Hamlin partially, but they remain alive. My Yuzu probably will also defoliate and is very wimpy looking. I thought Iād try a Sudachi for outdoors this year to see if I get a better result.
In greenhouse, growing in ground, all as espalier, I have Meiwa kumquat (now fruiting), Owari Satsuma, Fukushu, Shiranui mandarin, Bearss lime, Washington navel, Ponkan, and Harvey. Years ago I tried citrus in ghouse and it was a disaster! Eventually pulled them as they succumbed to scale and spider mite. This time around I am trying to be vigilant with monthly soapy water spray mixed with a little Neem. My lowest temp, like yours, has been 40F. Only a few of these varieties put out new growth at this low temp.
My surprise experiment this winter was loquat. While the seedlings outside did fine with a bit of protection, the 3 larger trees I purchased in Sept., and left inside, put on about a foot of growth and started flowering. They grew more actively than the stalled-out citrus. I grafted some with scions (wrapping with reptile heat cable) and all took. In the spring they are to be planted outside under polycarbonate protection.
Iām interested in your ghouse citrus collection.
Do bad you canāt splice the avocado genome with some seal genes. Ha!
Wow! Impressive collection! Do you have fruiting experience with Pineapple Guava, Mulberry, or Redhaven peach?
Carole: We should plan a meet-up at Mt. Vernon Winter Field Day on March 5! I think Dennis D. also expressed an interest in attending. Iāve been there many times and can give a guided tour.
Getting closer to the event, they usually have a printout of the scions available. So far they just have their antique apples list.
Single digits is pretty harsh even for the yuzu. Iāve only gone below 25 on a few night in 3 winters since planting outside. I would definitely cover with a plastic tent and place a portable propane heater inside. Have you ever gotten any fruit from your outside trees? That guy Bob Duncan on Vancouver Island gets pretty epic yields of yuzu and meyer lemon. Have you seen his videos on YouTube?
As for my greenhouse citrus it is a total vanity project. I grew up in Southern California and donāt like the idea of not having lemons growing beside my back door. I donāt like not having avocados either but I digress. Honestly if I add up all my gardening costs I probably have the most expensive citrus on the west coast of America. Iām pretty diligent about moving them in and out of the greenhouse during the winter and they seem to really like that. My yard is a heat island so they grow some during the winter. Iām on a hill with excellent southern exposure and cold air drainage. I also enclosed the garden area with a 7ā cedar fence. That was mainly to keep out the deer but it also captures some extra heat.
It gets tiring sometimes and I wonder if itās worth fighting against nature all winter. So this summer I decided to enclose my front porch as a sunroom to create an orangery. Since I can use my homeās heat it will be much less of a burden than hauling them in and out all winter.
has your persian and white pakistan mulberries fruited for you?
I do get fruit from the Pineapple Guava. Iāve had fruit from the Nikita, Cooledge and the Mammoth. Those are all 6 years old this year. They are about 4ft tall and give about a dozen fruit each. The fruit is uniquely delicious but Iām hoping production really gets going soon. Enough to frustrate you there arenāt more:).
Mulberries are easy here. I have several and they all started to fruit in year 2. Not a lot at first but Iām getting more every year. The only ones I had problems with are the Morus Nigra. Even though they are hardy here, they have struggled for me and died after a few years. Iām going to re-site them and try again.
As far as Redhaven peach, Iāve had it 4 years and it really gets hit with PLC. Iāve sprayed with Copper and Penine Sticker Spreader but still got hit a bit. Last year it put on some good growth, so Iām hopping to get my first harvest this year. I know the PLC has really stressed it the first few years.
Iāve had good luck with Frost Peach here. It is not the highest quality but still better than most you get in the store. Iāve heard good things about Nanaimo and have one in trial. Also have a Krabich nectarine that is supposed to resist PLC. Those results are TBD.
I had a persian black morus nigra that did but it dies suddenly last year. Not sure why. Both the white Persian and White Pakistan were planted last spring so no fruit yet. I got my White Pakistan from Troy at Restoring Eden and I ate some of his. They are a really amazing fruit. Not much acid but wow are they sweet and fruity. Really looking forward to them!
Thereās also the once every decade single
digit readings to wonder about. How did they hold up on the day in December with a high temp of 23 F? Is that the same day it dropped to a low of 18 F? Pretty good sign that the roots survived. Seems like the snow probably insulated the bottom of the plant from the colder surrounding air. I wonder how they would have fared without the snow as a buffer?
Itās been more than 30 years since Seattle last was that cold. I havenāt updated this in over a year, but hereās the minimum temperatures at SeaTac (which is usually close to my temperature) since 1990:
Iām gonna try in a pot. In a greenhouse
For me, none of the āPLC resistantā peaches are resistant here. I alternate lime sulfur with copper spray to keep PLC at about 5-10%. My 15 year old Avalon and Q 1-8 seem to have pretty much outgrown PLC, as some of the literature suggests will happen with established trees. My 8yo Nanaimo gets 5% PLC when sprayed but gives a good crop each year, a taste is better than Frost but still a bit lacking. Another PLC magnet is Betty, but the taste is really good. Itās a keeper as long as donāt fall off the spray wagon.
Youāre my goal. However I have .19 arces not 5! Iām interested to hear your favorite strawberries, blueberries and if the peaches ripen in time here.
Jason, glad you joined us. Looks like you have a lot of plants and I suspect a lot of experience with growing things here.
I should have clarified. Frost does get some PLC but it isnāt enough that it seems to affect the vigor or fruiting. It does get some PLC but not as much as to be detrimental to the growth or fruiting. I consider an acceptable amount of PLC to be any amount that doesnāt inhibit the growth beyond what I would deem as a vigorous tree and it still gives me acceptable fruit quality and quantity. One thing Iāve noticed is all the peach and nectarine trees Iāve planted near my chicken run have had less problem with PLC. Not sure if it is siting or if it is the āpearls from the girlsā that is helping with PLC. Iāve heard about the more established trees outgrowing PLC and I wonder if the trees close to the run are getting established quicker? Just a guess. I have 20 hens so the trees near the run get a non-stop buffet!
