Once you try Temflex you will never want to use anything else!
could you be more specific about witch temflex?
Temflex is a brand name for a large group of products.
There are many different types of vinyl electrical tape temflex. (got a few of those)
But also rubber based tape temflex. (costs 10 euro for a few meters roll in the EU not paying 0.5 euro a graft in tape.
I can imagine the rubber one falling off.
But the vinyl ones have to be cutt off. And leave some black bark for me. (facing sticky side out seems to help some. But makes it harder to apply)
Iāve used Parafilm M for over 25 yrs. Do not like the grafting tape formulation.
I buy the 2"x250ā roll. Cut off 6" lengths and cut those onto thirds, lengthwise, giving me strips 6"x2/3". Perfect for my purposes.
I never expect Parafilm to provide any structural strength, only to diminish dessication. I always overwrap graft union with a rubber band &/or masking tape.
Butā¦anymore, Iām mostly grafting nut trees. Apples/pears donāt require much more than a piece of masking tape and a drop of Elmerās wood glue on the top end of the scion to seal it.
Kathy,
Yours is the right kind. I have always used the kind Home Depot sells
Like Lucky, I use 3M Parafim M. I only cut it into half at 3ā length. It serves my purpose. It stretches very well. I used cheap parafilm before and not happy at all.
Cheap parafilm is the pits!!! Thatās why I try to always by the better kind. It doesnāt take long to learn that lesson.
Thanks for the picture that helps a lot.
Does it stretch a lot? like parafilm M (roughly 6 times itās origional length?)
Or is it a little less stretchy?
I think im gonna try it this year. Unfortunatly way higher priced in EU than in the US it seems.
i agree, cheap parafilm is horrible, or at least once youāf 'tasted" the real stuff.
I somtimes wonder how many people that had a hard time grafting or had their first few grafts fail. Could have had the āwrongā parafilm or temflex.
Im just really lucky that the first time i grafted i bought some parafilm M of ebay and had good succes
Itās not nearly as stretchy as parafilm but itās thick and supports the graft union well.
I found sliced strips from a potting soil bag workedā¦so everything since has been a piece of cake.
One of my mentors, a long time fruit/nut grower & grafter cut bread bags into strips and used them. I never tried thatā¦have been satisfied enough with what I learned with, initially - Parafilm M, rubber band, masking tape +/- aluminum foil - that Iāve not felt the need to change. YMMV.
I did the bread bag strips once. It lets light through and inteferes with healing. It needs to have a dark cover over the graft area too.
Iām going to get some Temflex this weekend. The rubber bands on many of my grafts are starting to deteriorate. They still need support, Iām sure - so I guess Iāll have to replace all those rubber bands!
If you cut the Temflex in half lengthwise when you stretch it it is similar to rubber bands. But easier. Just wrap it and it stick to itself once stretched. Be sure you stick the end of it down good by giving it a good stretch and pressure apply it into the part youāve already wrapped.
Get buddy tape. You wont regret it!
That stuff is amazing
I think you will love working with it. Like @k8tpayaso says, slice it lengthwise and it is super easy to work with.
I have settled into using a 4" roll of Parafilm M cut at a 45 degree angle into 1/2"-3/4" strips. The strips are just over 6" long from point to point. I wrap the graft with Parafilm, then the cheapest vinyl electrical tape I could find. You can skip the parafilm, but the tape will remove outer bark. It looks ugly, but does not seem to harm the tree.
The splicing tape is good stuff. I may buy some when I run out of vinyl, or if the vinyl fails me for some reason.
i must have got lucky as i bought 2 rolls of parafilm off ebay 3 yrs ago and the stuff works great! i wrap the whole scion 2xs and it splits off on its own by late summer. dont even remember the brand but i have enough of it to last a very long time. its white enough that with 2 wraps you cant see the scion underneath.
