Pawpaw Varieties

4-25

That’s “Pina Colada.” Ken should have that one planted next year.

Yeppers. They say it will likely never be released because they’ve had issues with vigor and high failure rate with propagation.

See that is why I get 1 gallon bags of scion for single cultivar instead of a single stick. All of them can’t fail.

For sure!
My fear, if I’m honest, is that it was probably a fluke.
If all the 4-25 fruits were durianesque, KSU probably wouldn’t have nicknamed it “piña colada”

I hope Ken has success with his!
My 4-25 seedling flowered for first time this past season but only set one tiny fruit. It wasn’t very good and neither durian or piña colada flavored. Clearly needs more time.

I wouldn’t say it was my favorite but better than I expected given some of the reviews I’ve read. Also it is quite interesting that it is reported to be self fertile and lower in annonacins than most pawpaws. It could be useful in breeding for those traits. The fact that it is one the latest of the season is enough for me to get one planted.

Speaking of differences in fruit grown in the south vs north the NC-1 I received from you was very good. It had a nice tropical flavor and was not overpowering. Nc-1 I got from an orchard in KY was way too much for me. I actually didn’t eat anymore pawpaws for a few days because of it.
The Susquehanna I received from you was a lot less strong as well. I enjoyed Neal and the one you had marked as Mound seemed to have a unique fruity flavor that I liked quite a bit.
The mango was interesting. This was the first time I’ve tried it. It was firmer than I expected. It had a little more unique flavor than most pawpaws I’ve had.
My wife really liked Shenandoah but she is so burnt out on pawpaws this late in the season she didn’t want more than one. :joy:

See this is kind of where comparing notes seems relevant. @SMC_zone6 @ramv @FarmGirl-Z6A @TrilobaTracker @Bradybb @IL847 have all sampled the pawpaws from the same location. The Shenandoah I’ved sampled a bit throughout the season as I mailed them. They come from the same 3 trees, and taste the same throughout the harvest. I think Shenandoah is pretty good @IL847 @TrilobaTracker tracker thought they were bland. The rest liked them.

You say my NC-1 is good, but Ken and I think both think NC-1 from here is already stronger than we prefer. You say there are stronger NC-1… If so, I don’t want them. >_<

“Neal” as I mentioned might be something unreleased from Neal Peterson. We need a bit more time to figure out what it could possibly be. I just called it “Neal” as a placeholder name, since we know the tree came from him. It doesn’t appear to be Rappahannock, Wabash, Allegheny, Susquehanna, Shenandoah, or Potomac. We can compare to those on site, and it doesn’t grow like any of them or taste like any of them.

I thought “Mound” tasted more on the wild side. @IL847 thought so too, but she liked it nonetheless. I didn’t care for it at all.

This is the first year I’ve noticed, we not only have taste preferences messing with our pawpaw evaluations, but the spanner that throws everything even more out of place is that the taste of the same cultivar seems to differ depending on location, even to the same person. Your post kind of confirms that.

What number does Lehman Chiffon correspond to?

It’s not one of Jerry’s actual selections - it was a seed received from Jerry by Hidden springs Nursery. They grew it out and named it in his honor. Does make for a little confusion since it’s not actually one Jerry selected.

It had some pretty interesting flavors but hoping for bigger fruit in the future. The soft texture is not my favorite but it’s tolerable

What would your top personal favorites be?

Well, oddly it’s hard to say.
I’ve sampled several varieties over the years but other than this year with my first home orchard harvest, I’ve not had a lot of repeat exposure to many varieties.
So, taking things with a grain of salt, ones that have made an impression on me are:
KSU Chappell
Susquehanna
Mango
Jerry’s Big Girl
Wabash
Wabash seedling here
KSU Atwood (mine were hit or miss but good ones were great)
Overleese
KSU piña colada (discussed above)
JustPeachy’s “garage west”

Jerry Lehman’s varieties have dominated the winner’s circle the last many years at the Ohio Pawpaw Fesitval, and of course Peterson varieties too. Can’t go wrong with those if you’re starting a collection.

Bear in mind, your tastes may differ from @TrilobaTracker I don’t much care for any of those except maybe Mango and Atwood. (I have yet to try JBG.)

I’m pretty sure @TrilobaTracker prefers stronger flavored pawpaws or at least more “tropical” relative to me. (I draw a distinction between tropical vs fruity, the latter tasting more of deciduous/temperate fruit flavors)

Most of the people posting about removing pawpaws don’t care for things like Susquehanna or Sunflower, the latter of which is relatively middle of the road.

I don’t think I have found anyone whose tastes in pawpaws line up exactly with mine yet. I have found people who like every cultivated pawpaw I give them to try.

Cool!
PS there are many people here more experienced than me :grinning:
