Pawpaws 2023

Anyone tried “Collins Select” pawpaw cultivar?
I decided to try ungrafted pawpaw trees this time, since grafted was such a disappointment for me.

I’ve never heard of that; It sounds like someone named Collin has a seed source they believe makes good seedlings.

Many times this holds true but doesn’t mean it would be described as a cultivar.

I hope your experience with this route goes well.

Don’t think it’s are real variety. Willis Orchard is the only place that has that and I think it’s just what disc4tw just said. Other nurseries will have better seedlings of real named varieties.

What nursery’s do you know of selling named seedlings (not grafted)? Thanks for any help.

Willis also has a pineapple banana I was interested in - not sure if that is real either.

I would think twice before ordering anything from Willis Orchard. Use a search engine here to find out what people have said about this nursery.

The search engine is a symbol of a looking glass on the top right corner of the page.

Edible Landscaping, OGW, ect. all have seedlings of named varieties.

I’m new to pawpaw and wanting to learn more about them. You mentioned two different pawpaw species and I want to know if you can grow these are they true from seed.? I’ve read that many are wild and wonder if all are. Are the named ones grafted onto a wild rootstock? I would be interested in buying seeds if you or someone else has them for sale.

Luke,
Are you sure I was the one mentioning there are two pawpaw species?
I don’t know much about pawpaws. All I know is that there are the wild ones and the cultivated one.

There are several people/groups who have worked on breeding good quality pawpaws such as Neil Peterson and Kentucky State U.

I wish you ask me about pawpaws seeds in Oct. At this point, I have nothing left. I hope someone here can help you.

Thank you for letting me know.

They don’t grow true to seeds but from what I read there is a good chance that seedlings from good cultivars may produce decent fruit.

It is a good idea that if you want to grow from seeds, use ones from named varieties.

I have plenty of seeds from un–named varieties. Not for sale, but glad to send you @Lukeott some. PM me your address and I’ll get some to you. At this point most of them should be about cold stratified, as they’ve been sitting in my fridge since August or early September. Be sure to read up about how to keep the seed viable, and planting, as the seed and seedlings require some different care than most fruit. If anyone else wants some free seed I’m glad to send them, within reason, meaning I’m not going to make 10 trips to the post office just to mail out pawpaw seeds. The descriptions of the trees I saved them from are in my previous post. I did not save any seed from the one described as “seedy and only 5oz.”

Did you ever end up getting any fruit?

@Blake @disc4tw — is there a chart anywhere that you know of that lists all the cross-pollination windows (i.e. which are early, late, etc). I’ve picked a few varieties to start my patch next summer, but I want to make sure I’ve got the right pollinating pairs.

The only time I have heard of folks feeling like they need specific cultivar pairs for early blooming is KY Champion and Overleese. Pawpaws typically have a long bloom period so specific matches are not typically necessary. Id prefer to put similar ripening window cultivars together so that it simplifies harvest.

Thanks. I read that Halvin, one of the kinds I’m looking at, is very early, which is why I’m asking. I’m zone-pushing up here in 5b, and while I’ve gotten mixed signals on how much I need to worry about that here, I figure better to start conservative.

But it’s hard to sort out what’s real and what’s not, and not all of the various sites agree…e.g. while I’ve read the same thing as you re: Overleese as early pollinator, multiple websites call it a late ripener, etc.

Pawpaw all flower roughly around the same time. They are most likely referring to it ripening early. That’s what most people are worried about.

Ah, gotcha — I was worried about pollination windows, having stared at apples for a bit!

I ended up getting 12 seedlings from Fruitwood Nursery.

I’ve not ordered any of their seedlings before. I’d be interested to see what they send you. They use named seeds for theirs though.

Earthly delights sells fruit but you will have to try next year because the season is over.
