These did ripen up - smelled the whole house up
Haven’t made me sick either.
The flavor wasn’t top notch but pretty good. I processed most of them so I have a head start on frozen pulp.
In other news, already getting cracked fruit on my chappell triggered by the sudden shift from drought to rain (still raining). And they aren’t even attempting to ripen/size up yet.
This one definitely has cracking issues.
A little fyi…Cricket Hill has some rare older varieties now listed on their site.
NC-1 and Shenandoah are pretty common, but they have Quaker Delight, IXL, and SAA Zimmerman as well. Pretty sure QD is inferior, but I believe I’ve read IXL is decent. Not sure about SAA Z, but I may try getting a stick from them next spring to keep the germplasm alive. They have a variegated as well…not sure if that’s the spilt milk.
First pawpaw of the year for me, and the very first from this seedling tree. Good size, not seedy, nice firm texture, extremely mild flavor-maybe a bit underripe.
Pretty cool that I tree I grafted back in early summer of 2022 is making its first crop!
I had originally planted a grafted tree that died back to the roots, gave it a year to grow back then regrafted it(different cultivar). They’re just starting to plump up. Can’t wait for them to start dropping!
Local selection I found in Louisville, turned out to be a Sunflower x Susquehanna seedling that KSU gave the city to plant. This is the first one I’ve had in years, but when I tried it initally I knew it was worth grafting. Pure sweetness, no bitter aftertaste, and very firm flesh. Seems like it got good flesh density from Susquehanna and milder flavor from Sunflower. Growth has been vigorous so far. I’ll post pictures once I cut into it.
For me, there are several signs of ripeness. They develop a distinct and powerful fragrance. They get softer. Their skin changes color, for some trees that means to a pale yellow with a hint of green, for others just a lighter green. After those things happen they fall off the tree.
Really excited about a seeding that’s finally been able to keep its flowers and set fruit.
It’s from either Maria’s Joy or Bennys Favorite, from Lehman’s farm in IN.
A friend brought me fruit after visiting Jerry’s place in 2018.
I planted the seeds the next winter in pots and planted out that same spring.
Anyway , this tree has been very vigorous, probably 4+ inch diameter at the base and 10 feet tall with a full, wide shape.
The fruit are very round and seem rather large - nearly every fruit is the same size (of course I thin all my trees pretty heavily.) this tree has the consistently biggest fruit of the rest, it seems.
The texture is firm but not tough, seems to have small seeds compared to JBG or Chappell. Only measured weight of a couple fruits and it was in the 4-5.5% range.
The flavor is great - in line with the other Lehman varieties. “Smooth” and “classic pawpaw” are the best descriptors for his stuff (the latter I took from Jerry).
Really excited for this one but of course limited data so far.
I call it Big Ben in honor of my good buddy who brought me the fruit.
Seems like a real winner. How does the ripening timing compare to others? If this is early/mid for you sign me up for a stick of that. I need all of the vigor I can get up here.
Cut open two fruits so far. The fruit from this grafted tree hasn’t lived up to my memories of fruit from the ortet, not as good flavor or texture wise. I am holding onto hope that it will improve since its still a very young tree(grafted in 2022). The second fruit was better than the first but still room for improvement.
