Pawpaws in 2025!

Has anyone observed parafin wax (to seal scion ends) to degrade the pawpaw wood? I’m seeing a lot of black near those sealed ends, and black streaking up the scion.

I’ve only sealed one cultivar of scions with it (I think) so trying to determine if it’s the wax, or an issue with the scion. I’ve used the wax on other species like pear, and it keeps the wood super fresh and green.

Pawpaw wood is a lot softer than a lot of other fruit woods. I don’t use anything other than a ziplock bag in the fridge and wrap the scion in parafilm when I graft.

@Blake

Does Sri Gold ripen as late as sunflower? I looking for a good late ripener, but have heard mixed reviews on the flavor of sunflower.

Tropical Treat
October Moon 275-17
Susquehanna
Potomac

These are very late varieties.

Never. I use Gulf Wax paraffin in this manner and have never observed issues.
Granted, not sure how much good it does either. Many pros skip it.

Yeah I have noticed that Benson gets short shrift.
It’s a bold flavored fruit IME and can be very tasty. Round shape.
I think being followed quickly by the release of Chappell, which has many positive attributes, maybe overshadowed Benson.

My tree I think had rootstock issues and was planted in a bad spot. I cut it down after years of disappointment. I have a Benson seedling however that is very tasty.

I noticed Buzz at Perfect Circle hasn’t listed anything yet - or even listed when he might be selling pawpaws. Not sure if it was just a cold wet spring and everything is behind - has anyone heard from him?

I’m in a short season and looking to replace a pawpaw that didn’t make it. I would say my location is challenging for paw paw. I’m at 4k feet in the high desert. In the summer, highs are typically in the 90s, with usually a week of weather hitting 100, and nights in the 50s. My growing season is usually May to mid October. That being said, I’ve had success with pawpaw survival. I planted out many seedlings 3 years ago, of which one survived and is growing. I also have a Wabash and Mango that seem to be doing well. I put in a Allegheny and Tallahatchie this season that seem to be doing well so far.

Any suggestions for an excellent pawpaw that may ripen in my short season to trial here?

Going entirely off things I’ve read with zero first-hand experience (but as someone who is also zone-pushing with a short GDD period), Halvin, Nyomi’s Delicious, Summer Delight, and Kentucky Champion are all named cultivars that are supposed to be relatively early ripening and hardier to climate. All are targets for me in zone 5b NH; I have an ND and SD, but need to find a Halvin and KC.

He sent the email out last year in late June. I can’t recall if he made a site update before then.

Sri Gold ripens late here in Kentucky, around the latter half of September.

Halvin, Nyomi’s Delicious, PA Golden might work for you. Nyomi’s ripens late August here in KY.

Seems like both my pawpaw grafts didn’t take, so may just leave those trees to grow with their own fruit and see how it turns out. Also same for my american persimmon.

Did you graft them when the rootstock was budding? This is important.

Yeah, I think I’m not getting the grafting tape tight enough

I put a ksu benson and chappell in this spring from onegreenworld. The chappell died, but they were out if them for replqcements. Ended up getting an allaghaney for replacement.

What are you using for shade cloth?

This is what it looks when a 100+ year old red oak falls right on top of your pawpaw orchard:

Check out how close it came to that last row of trees!

Did some damage, killed a few but not that big of a deal. I knew he was gonna crash down sooner or later.

Remenber the “pinnies” for flag football back in school? Same material.
