yeah i went there for a lesson thing on paw paws, very knoweldgable guy. but idk about 100 dollars for a small graft tree
Charles West…but only for pickup…does not ship
yes…for sure VERY expensive…but he is in a upscale NJ location (near Trump’s golf course) and sells out…for me, fortunately got money to burn…time?..not so much
I bought two paw paws from him in 2020 which gave me small fruitlets this year, and I bought five paw paws from restoring eden online this year. Even if the paw paws Charles sells are large, it may take a few years anyway. However, if 1 year of difference from a 5 footer compared with a 2 footer is worth a difference of ~$70 / tree, I’d say it’s worth it in your situation to buy the bigger ones.
yea…still undecided…either Maria’s Joy or Prima
That looks really nice. I can see that it is free stone from the picture. Do you have a sense of its relative vigor?
Less vigorous than my Shenandoah and Danaes Creekside. But not bad.
It’s really close to my Shenandoah so maybe I will prune that one to give it more light.
here is the end of the season multi-grafted pawpaws. supposed to get into the 20s in the next week so im making the final report this year unless something crazy happens. i was promised beautiful golden fall pawpaws leaves. i have yet to see my pawpaws go golden in the fall ![]()

i didnt measure the growth of the grafts but the trees are every bit 5.5’-6’. the JBG graft all the way to the left of the second tree didnt make it. both buds on the central scion(mammoth x) are competing for leadership. ill likely prune the smaller one this winter. you can see it better in this picture:
Mine are a pretty golden color!
Most of the trees have already lost their leaves. The callery pear, Norway maple, a few apples, and a couple oaks still have leaves. So I suppose the pawpaw changed in the mid-late part of the leaf season.
I don’t get the nice uniform yellow leaves either. Must be too warm/too long summer here.
They just turn mottled brown/green/yellow and fall off.
Does anyone have any available seeds saved from VE-21 fruit this year? I’ve been wanting to grow out some seedlings here from them. Hand or likely pollinated from another early variety would be even better.
So I came here to post about this.
I am on the 6B7 a line outside Boston. I have one Kentucky legend Titan from Blake that I planted last year, one other Blake tree that died to the roots, but has re-sprouted vigorously and I should be able to graft next year, and two Kentucky State nursery seedlings.
I have one neighbor with three trees that have all gone, yellow, and most other trees in my neighborhood have changed color and dropped leaves. But my Kentucky, legend has just a few yellow leaves, the sprouted one has none, and my Kentucky state seedlings are a little bit more turned, but not very. My David’s candy persimmon and even my hearty banana are all robust. However, my hearty kiwi has lost all leaves.
I mostly came here to post like — wow, mild fall (I think our first frost was Thursday) and house effect. I haven’t noticed any other problems and my trees are growing vigorously. But curious if I should look.
As long as the wood has lignified and hardened up you should be good. Most of my leaves will still be green when we get below freezing here on Sunday.
…were the pawpaws able to ripen successfully in southern New Hampshire this year?..I noted that Concord airport barely made 2530 GDD 50F for the season (to the degree that is critical?)…it reached 2900 GDD here by Nov 10 with the first frost (28F) on Oct 10 at 2835 GDD…mid season Chappell ripened here on Sept 29 / 2733 GDD…I guessed a May 10 blooming date here with an approx. 60F ave. temp on that date and an approx. 250 GDD 50 up to that date…do you know the approx. blooming date this year up there?..I think the weather was quite atypical in the northeast this year with the exceptional late season drought…I noted an explosion in paw paw size after a thorough watering following a 6 week drought and then a rapid ripening thereafter…anyway…looking forward to a more typical season next year and think I can be confident that all varieties can fully ripen at my location…am planning my future “pawpaw pathway” along the Dutchess rail trail …have enough seeds for about a two mile stretch behind my property with about 40 locations at 90 yard intervals…will try about 8 seeds at each location and just hope for the best…if I can ID enough appropriate locations…will plant on the western side of the trail about 10 feet from the tree line further west…so near full morning sun and late (after 3PM) afternoon shade from the tree line…fate willing, will live long enough to see fruition
A woman in Hillsborough had them all ripen in early October. Concord is a pretty warm location. I don’t think we’ll have a problem here except with the latest ripening cultivars.
Tell me where you live as I’m going to buy a house in the neighbourhood! ![]()
