The papaya I’m referring to is the pawpaw. The shipping time to my location is quite long, expected to be several weeks. Of course, I’m happy to cover some of the packaging and handling costs.
You didn’t really clarify. Papaya, the tropical fruit grown on a single stalk tree, is called pawpaw in India and other countries in that direction. The American Pawpaw, the temperate tree which is what this thread is about, is never called papaya as far as I am aware. They are also unrelated plants and have very few similarities other than fruit shape.
You’re right, what I was referring to is pawpaw.
Thank for the encouragement. I will know in a few weeks, as my in-ground Asimina start waking up, if I managed to kill my 100+ seedlings of named varieties. We were below freezing for 28 continuous hours here so those thin 12” sleeves didn’t protect the potting mix at all. Next year I’ll move them to a warmer place if hard freezes threaten.
I think they’ll be fine. 28 hours of freezing temps is not a big deal.
Jia is from China and is some sort of communist pawpaw spy. That’s why the comments are so confusing.
I never wax seal my scions and there is really no reason to do so. I don’t want my pawpaw scions going to CHINA. Thank you very much.
is this a joke. im confused lol. Nothing wrong with people in china wanting to grow paw paws?
Maybe in China they will try breeding low acetogenins varieties ![]()
Hearing the term “spy,” I instantly felt like my thinking was out of touch with the times. Setting aside the political systems of the two countries, everyone is just an ordinary person. I don’t know what role we play in your country’s education system, but it certainly doesn’t reach the level of being a spy. Some are simply ordinary people who enjoy growing pawpaws.
But that’s okay, I think you might have different considerations, and I completely understand your concerns, Mr. Black. You’ve completely underestimated the concept of the global village and international trade. I’m just worried about mislabeled pawpaw varieties in the surrounding area. ![]()
All of the fruit you grow and sell originated in the US? What a patrtiot!
Yes, all the products I sell are PROUDLY USA PATRIOT GROWN AND PRODUCED, PATTYCAKE.
Personally, I appreciate Asian traditional cultural elements like TCM and achievements such as Asian pears, vegetables and jujubes. Many of those impressive varieties originated in Asia OBVIOUSLY. Glad we acquired those to enhance the USA’s production and I take full advantage of them.
Pawpaw varietals are my own intellectual and agricultural achievements that took many years to achieve and I can share them how and with whom I choose. I no longer export internationally. International trade is obviously important but not to my business. Others have sent my material outside the USA, but that was their doing, not mine. My business serves America first. My work is to support hardworking USA families, homesteaders and farmers looking to grow food and support themselves agriculturally. My quantities of pawpaw material is very limited and I want it to stay in the USA. However, I do provide educational and intellectual material (mostly for free) that is available globally to support international horticultural development, which I am happy to do. It’s my life, my life’s work, and my family business. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
If in 20 years a new, spectacular pawpaw variety from China is introduced I sure hope it has the name “Communist Spy.” Everyone in the world will be confused except the people who read these last few comments.
Well hoo-fucking-ah! I just got goosebumps reading that.
I thought you might be a close-minded imp that stands on the shoulders of hard-working people all over the world, claims the fruits of nature as their own, and then touts their own exceptionalism as reason to tell the rest of humanity to go fuck off. Glad I was wrong about you!
Some radical people out there might think a person could choose to not sell internationally and still treat people with basic decency at the same time. Crazy I know!
the idea that china is trying to steal paw paw varieties is one of the funniest conspiracy theories ive seen. To what end.
The name goes hard though
I’m on long Island and can supply your friend with some flowers
It was a joke about Jia being a pawpaw spy. I don’t know the guy, he’s probably alright… But seriously, some Chinese have tried to approach me with some weird and shady stuff over the years and I am on guard when they come to me wanting things. Everyone wants what the USA has.
These days I have to defend myself online ALL THE TIME. Just recently somebody accused me of selling pawpaw seeds imported from China. Classic.
Like they say, you never get hate from those above you, only from below.
Does anybody have a sense of humor anymore? And @belowtheterrace you’re probably a cool guy in real life, but our first ever interaction was you directing unprovoked rude comments at me, so ya got fed back what you served out. I don’t turn down a fight. As fun as all of this has been I’d like to get back on point with posts about pawpaws.
Does anybody have good photos of Lehman or Wahl pawpaw varieties? These seem to be very hard to come by.
I love jokes, this just isnt funny. its racist to be honest. And hypocritical considering i see plenty of asian originated cultivars on your website. You sell asian pears and plenty of asian persimmon. plus mulberry. I understand not wanting to go through the hassle of shipping internationally, i wouldnt. But you can do that without calling a random fruit grower colleague on a community chat board a freaking communist spy like its the 1950s.
hopefully you didnt realize the greater impact of it, but what it does is it makes growers like jia and all chinese people feel less welcome here. And that would be a great loss to fruit growing to cut off information from part of the world.
