I really don’t see why people are getting so worked up about this. Most of you getting mad aren’t probably Asian. As a part Asian myself, I see nothing wrong with what @Blake is saying. @Blake isn’t saying something racist. It’s just a different type of humor. Yeah some people aren’t used to that type of humor, but it’s not racism just because you don’t understand it.
We can all agree to disagree here. Let’s get back to pawpaws now, OK?
Back to the frozen pawpaw seedling pot topic…
I have some young potted pawpaw and persimmon seedlings that froze inside my Gorilla Cart last December and they’ve been stuck in there ever since. It’s at least 23°F in there (Not sure if the temp bottomed out) and was probably colder at some points so it will be a neat experiment to see if any/all survive. It’s not warming up much in the next 2 weeks so they’re not leaving the dump cart anytime soon.
Sorry all. I just get annoyed when people accuse people of being racist when it’s ment as a joke. Not trying to call anyone out, so no hard feelings?
No hard feelings Ethan. You didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t apologize for giving your honest viewpoint.
But we’ll disagree on the other guy. Calling something a joke isn’t a free card to say whatever you want. If you’re going to hide behind the joke excuse, you have to at least be funny. A few cheap shots at someone’s accent and ethnicity is pretty weak. Especially when they’re just asking you some genuine questions.
Wasn’t sure if others saw, but Timothy Lane setup a gofundme for R. Neal Peterson if anyone wants to donate (I didn’t quite understand the info, but think its to help him make payments for another used car [from 2012] or make one big payment so he doesn’t have to do monthly payments?):
Limited temp success followed by death of cutting.
I see, it seems the rumors weren’t true. Thank you for the information.
Years ago a drought wiped out at least one of Neal’s orchards and with it his life savings. So glad to see the community step up to help this fine gentleman.
They managed to get cuttings to survive longer than most experimenters, plus grow more, but they didn’t get more than (Callus) for the roots. So no cell differentiation. And eventually died of fungal death, after a few months of growth.
Species most likely has the genes for roots (Methylated) in a way that the gene or a regulator chemical for the gene, isn’t accessable, in the above ground cuttings.
Etiolation increased temporary take in experiments done in the USA.
But everything died prior to 7 months from date of claimed take.
We are fortunate to have a few high quality ortets available for pawpaws that root cuttings could be nursed for own root clones, although I rarely see folks taking that route.
Pawpaws evolved very different strategies for survival compared to most other temperate plants. Those mechanisms may limit propagation through rooting cuttings. It should be noted that many other trees are challenging to establish from cuttings.
I’ve sampled Regulus, it was a worthwhile fruit for sure. I’m excited to grow it.
Thanks for the context. That’s very sad. I donated a bit to the fundraiser. Hope to get to a place where I can donate more.
Thank you for posting this info. To me, Neal is a synonym for pawpaws. I hope more people donate to help him and that he receives more donation than he needs.
…thanks much…..I will PM you with contact information….he is in North Bellmore…..Beemster
This is the last thing I’ll say on this topic: I’d like to make it clear, so that I don’t go down in history misunderstood as being some ignorant Anti-Asian bigot, that I have no anti-Asian bias. I would gladly be surrounded by Asian neighbors, and wish that I had Asian neighbors. I shop at Asian stores, grow Asian crops, use traditional Asian tools, take Chinese herbs, eat Asian food, do martial arts, and have spent time in parts of Asia and would go back. I would’ve happily married an Asian woman, and for those that married an Asian beauty, congrats! I would gladly welcome more Asians to integrate into the USA and I find their generally intense pro-family values, rich cultural tapestry and hardcore industriousness very impressive and I wish more Americans would get off their asses and shared those same value sets (this is not a generic stereotype, I’ve witnessed this in person dozens and dozens of times).
In fact, I modeled my work ethic off of what I experienced being around Asians, as I have never seen more hard working people who can combine efficiency and speed like they do, with no excuses and no time off. We Americans could learn a lot with that. And, I have Asian friends and I firmly reject the recent anti-Asian bigotry and would defend US Asians or Chinese immigrants in a heartbeat. However, I unashamedly and vehemently don’t like communism or what it has done to the Chinese and other Asians (that was not a joke).
Unfortunately, though, my business is frequently targeted by unscrupulous Asian/Chinese/communists/Russians who are 24/7 trying to hack and approach me with weird and shady business proposals and scams. Jia has privately messaged me a few times and the interactions felt like one of those weird scammy instances and set off my alarm bells, probably incorrectly. I’m outspoken and prone to unabashedly speaking my mind openly without censorship and without committee approval / political correction to filter my thoughts and opinions, and you’ll either love it or be threatened by it. In frustration over unrelated personal matters, I made an unfair joke that caused offense. For that I apologize to Jia who is probably an honest gentleman and fine person and did not deserve any unkind words on my part. If you ever want to come to the US, I would happily welcome you on my farm.
Be Involved — New York Pawpaw Festival Paw Paw fest in New York going to be happening this year, Saw it on paw paw fanatics fb page. maybe @Beemster @Ejp3 maybe you two would be interested.
Not sure who else is in NY or even the northeast. Tickets are very expensive for an unproven fest though… 38 for a single day and 61 for earlibird, not including parking. More expensvie than the ohio one which has been going for years
Is anyone buying pawpaw trees, scion wood or seeds this year? What nursery are you planning to buy from? Have you bought from them before or will this be your first time. Inquiring minds want to know. ![]()
I bought scion and trees from Blake @ peaceful heritage this year and in the past and they were really nice. I’ve also purchased from Perry’s pawpaws in the past with nice plants received as well.
i got some from edible landscaping. they were on the small size but reasonable for the price. we’ll see how they leaf out in spring and i’ll let you know
