Peach variety report after winter 2024/2025

Zombie,
April 13th and the fruit buds on my trees are…not much different than they were a couple weeks ago…they have swollen… I’m at my orchard all week…I expect by Saturday I’ll see some pink

Benton… Same here… I had a few flowers open last weekend, but all progress has stagnated over the past week.

This is helpful list.

I grafted Harrow Diamond this spring hoping it might be hardier than other varieties, but looking at your list I’m a little discouraged. Redhaven hasn’t had any blooms for me the last two years so if Harrow Diamond fell a little below Redhaven for you then it will probably suffer the same fate.

The only peaches that have blooms this year are Contender with about a half dozen blooms, and Polly White with about 20 or so.

I might have to try Encore before I give up on peaches. At least until I can get some better wind breaks established.

You might also give Reliance a try, if you haven’t already. I ordered three of them this spring from Schlabach’s nursery. Evidently, Reliance is supposed to be as hardy as Contender.

I have a Reliance and it’s performed about the same as Redhaven. No blooms this year. I only have 1 of each peach tree though so maybe it’s not a fair test.

Western Washington checking in with a small bedside report:
:mountain_snow:
Big D had a lot of branch dieback here in the pnw due to rain + very early bloom. I’m guessing fungal or bacteria or fireblight but this is one that must be protected from severe rain. No signs of PLC though. Not recommended without cover here in the pnw.

Fantasia Nectarine has the most PLC alongside Hollywood plum. Hollywood plum surprised me with the amount of aphids and plc that it had since others I’ve seen around Seattle seemingly has 0 issues without spraying.

Elberta moderate PLC

:sparkles:the winners from my memory of checking them yesterday:sparkles:
:peach:
Blushing star doing great, very minimal plc.

Artic jay is doing great

Sweet Bagel or galaxy (forgot which) minimal PLC as well and fruit set looks like it’s already a thing.

White ume Apricot - can’t find any pests, extremely minimal plc, bloomed waaaay too early if i recall correctly. No fruit set. Blossoms froze and died.

Glowing star and rising star look great as well. Very minimal plc on both.

Indian blood looks fantastic but don’t remember if i saw any fruit set.

Red haven - don’t remember if i checked it or not

Amoore Sweet - moderate fruit set, beautiful, very minimal PLC if any

Sweetheart cherry - doing great, fruit already looks like it’s forming so i need to find some big baggies soon lol. Don’t wanna spray all year just for a few cherries.

Toka plum looks amazing and is blooming right now. No leaves, just blooms.

Shiro looks great as well.

:peach::cherries:
So far, it looks like Fantasia Nectarine, Hollywood plum, and Big D peach may be potted for the next 3+ years unless I’m able to make some type of giant umbrella for them the next few years. Really disappointed in this Hollywood plum :sob: now I’m wondering what red leaf cherry Plum I’ve been actually wanting because i thought it was Hollywood…
Will update this later on with more details and accuracy

Those could be Curly Leaf Plum Aphids, causing the distorted leaves.

Probably, but i threw a systemic and sprayed it the other night at 2am. They’re still alive :face_with_spiral_eyes: but I’m hoping not for long

You want “Blue Ribbon”. It is an excellent redleaf plum. Leaves are deeper red and fruit is twice the diameter with a better flavor. Try it and you wont regret it.

Once they get into the curled up leaves,it’s tough to get at them with a contact killer. What systemic was used?

Our single relience set well.

How do reliance taste comparatively? I haven’t had one in a very long time, but brix seemed low and flavor so so. Maybe they’ve improved since then. I really don’t need anything else ready when red haven is, but I thought about grafting a few branches.
