Persimmon Bark Splitting

Box stores are clearing stock on their trees and I picked up this Fuyu persimmon.

Anyone know what these splits in the bark are? I see 2 on the tree about 2 inches long. They’re on opposite sides and different heights. So I don’t think it’s hail damage or sun splitting. It would surprise me if it’s a disease but I wanted to check here before planting. My best guess is a bud died? Thoughts?

Hmm I don’t know what that is but it’s not that a bud died. Buds that die don’t cause bark splits. And you can see the only nearby bud and it still looks healthy.

It might just be a physical injury but I’d think more likely something like freeze damage.

Ohh freeze damage would make sense maybe I didn’t think of that. Yeah the weather’s been weird here. What I was thinking with the bud dying would be that the bud dies, dries out, falls off, then this leaves a cavity where the bark is liable to start splitting from (worse due to the small caliper). There are 2 other dead buds where the bark has split directly over the bud. Tree caliper ~1/4" - 3/8" where the bark has split. The small caliper exacerbating the splitting.

I notice a similar split on my fuyu this morning. It was about 1" and not open as wide as yours. Looking forward to seeing opinions of the cause.
