Not so, at least not reliably enough to observe here, as I have observed male flowers on varieties such as Tashu, Chocolate, Coffee Cake. I grow and fruit Morris Burton and it produces only female flowers and seedless fruit. Moreover I see no evidence that it is “self-fertile.” I think the author is confused.
Again, quoting my ChatGPT:
<< In Jerry Lehman’s discussion of American persimmon breeding, Lehman specifically identifies four female cultivars that occasionally produce male flowers:
-
Early Golden
-
Garretson
-
Killen
-
Szukis
Lehman discusses Morris Burton extensively as a breeding parent but does not include it among those producing male flowers. This is particularly noteworthy given his extensive work with Morris Burton genetics. >>
