Raintree Nursery is carrying a yellow fig variety from Italy for 2017 delivery.
Peter’s Honey is a good tasting fig similar to LSU gold in taste but smaller. Raintree’s looks more pink in the center then mine do.
Should I buy one? Is it worth keeping?
yes it’s worth keeping and 20 bucks for a 1 gallon size isn’t too bad. I would offer you some cuttings but this is one of the ones that had die back last winter and it didn’t really do much this year in terms of bouncing back. It’s a very common fig I’m sure another member has it and can share some cuttings with you. It will do better in your zone 8b then my 7b.
Is the Kadota Fig the same as Peter’s Honey? Brady
Some say Peter’s Honey, Kadota, Dottato, and white TX everbearing are all the same.
DWN grows Peter’s Honey fig trees, so they are widely available in retail nurseries all over California. It’s a nice fig, but not as good as some others, so if you have a limited space, I would suggest you go with something else.
My Peter’s Honey and Kadota are quite different.
are different varieties Peter’s Honey is an Italian variety and dotatto or Kadota is the same variety of Spanish origin.
I don’t grow Kadota or Dottato I lost them both a few years ago and never replaced them so I personally never compared them to PH but many people on F4F have made these claims so maybe some bogus cuttings where passed around a few years ago or something.
I have a pretty large tree and could send you cuttings this Winter if you wanted. I agree with the others, though, that this is a pretty generic honey fig that is widely available in retail nurseries. That doesn’t make it a bad choice by any means, but there are probably better all-around figs.
For anyone in zone 8-10 I’d recommend Peter’s Honey. It’s a mid to late ripening fig, but it’s best to get this one ripening at the time of high heat. If it goes too late you will be disappointed. I did a review of my tree + it’s fruit… See for yourself:
I’m in zone 8,near Seattle. The Fig may work here, but our Summers don’t get real hot,so there is always a question of ripening.Brady
I would not grow this one in Seattle. There are plenty of honey figs out there, which can do a much better job there. I would recommend LSU Champagne & any of these… they are all the same in my book. Lattarula, Blanche, Byadi, Italian Honey, Marseilles, Oregon Prolific, St. Anthony, White Marseilles.
Honestly Hardy Chicago, Ronde de Bordeaux or any fig that consistently produces brebas is probably your best bet.
Figs with consistent/tasty brebas:
Desert King
Fiorone di Ruvo
Filacciano Bianco
Grantham’s Royal
Lampeira Preta
Mykonos Black
Gilette
Brooklyn White
English Brown Turkey Family
Lattarula Family
Sal’s Corleone Family
Longue d’Aout
Atreano Family
Grise de St Jean
Madeleine de Deux Saisons
Blanche de Deux Saisons
Osborne Prolific
Fracazzano Rosso (san pedro?)
Morena
Paradiso
Rob’s Genovese Nero
Lattarula EL/Church Greek
